Any advice out there re the best tyres for purely road use?

Have read a bit on here about the PR4's but not much else has been discussed in the way of a pure road tyre that I can find.
I had considered the Dunlop Roadsmarts, has anyone any experience of them?

I was tempted by the PR4's and those that have them seem to be very happy....but I've decided to go with the Conti Road Attack 2 Evo's.

I've had Conti's on the bike ever since I got it (5 years now) and they have never let me down in any road/weather condition.

FYI: I have a 07 hex head, not WC....

:D

The Roadsmarts are very good. I currently have Bridgstone Battlax T30s as they seems better suited to touring than the Dunlop and are easier to find. Never liked the look of the PR4 and they're expensive.

PR 4’s. Tried them in summer on a 1200GS TE. Not much sign of wear or squaring off after 4,000 mls. Can’t remember what the stock tyres were but they squared off quite quickly.

I've had Conti Road Attacks, Dunlop Roadsmart over the past few years, both have been very good and the rears replaced around 5k. I'm currently using (on my Stelvio NTX) Dunlop TR91 Trailmax which are excellent wet/dry and give a feeling of confidence on gravelly broken surface backroads, and worked ok on dirt tracks in the dolomites. The rears changed at 5kmls fronts about 7.5kmls.
There is a link somewhere on the forum for a test done by a german magazine on road and dual use tyres, I can't find it at the moment, hopefully someone else can point you to it.

Replaced the OEM fit Anakee 3's (horrible, horrible, horrible) with PR4s and very pleased so far after 2k miles on them.

New bike came with the conti attacks in May, got 4500 out back tyre. Replaced with same.
Bike now at 6700 and front still looks good for a few thou yet, although can see a bit of a chamfer.

Always used Contis on my 54 GS for some 25,000 miles got through 5 backs and 3 fronts.

I like my Anakee 3's I have over 9k miles on my front and my 2nd rear has done about 6.5k. I find them good in all road conditions, only criticism would be they are a bit noisy!

I will be putting a new pair on in the Spring

FWIW I used them for 2 years and thought they were fantastic road tyres - I did however pick up a lot of punctures and that put me off in the end.

I had roadsmarts on my hex head and have them on my job bike. I rate them highly and think they're a very good tyre. They're also very good in the wet. The only thing I've noticed about them (which we've all commented on at work) is that they like a couple of minutes to warm up. Whilst that in itself is a pretty obvious comment to make about all tyres, I've noticed it in particular with the roadsmarts. (Our work depot is just off a series or roundabouts and the bike always feels heavy and slow to steer for the first two minutes, but after that ... very good indeed).

One make of brand prone to picking up punctures ?? Ummmmm .... I wonder if that's just a dose of bad luck .... :nenau

PR4's
Fast steering
Lots of feel.
Very sporty
Huge grip wet or dry
Encourages hooligan activities as they make the bike more chuckable.

Dunlop Roadsmart II's compared to PR4's
Slower steering
Less feel
More stable
Grip.......Mmmm, I'ii have to give to the pr's because of the confidence they give you.
More mileage

I have been told by a tyre person that some club racers use the PR3 as a intermediate tyre for racing.

I got a massive chunk of glass in my pr4 back tyre, pushed down one of the ridges/grooves, and its not done more than 50 miles, so am inclined to agree they may be puncture prone due perhaps to the tread pattern.

Roadsmart 2 on mine. No problems.. great tyre and fair bit cheaper than most.
paid £190 a pair fitted on loose wheels. brill tyres .

Thanks for all the feedback Guys,

Looks like I can't really go wrong with either the PR4's or the Roadsmarts so I guess it will come down to price and availability.

Cheers

new tr91 trailsmart tyres due out in january, same grip etc but apparently better mileage

I was out for a spin this afternoon, and noticed my rear Anakee III was down to the wear bar.

5300 miles, and reasonably happy with their performance. They are the first ever trail type tyre I've even owned, so have nothing to compare them with. This is also my first Adventure style bike.

The front Anakee would not see out another rear, so I went for a pair of PR4's....................... What a difference !............ Smoother, quieter, and on reflection they make the Anakee's feel like I had a iffy wheel bearing.

Well happy with the new rubber...... :JB:JB

I have had OEM Tourance Next on 13 GSW, I replaced the rear with another Tourance Next at 9500 klm and left the front on as it looked ok. I was pretty happy with them, they gripped well in wet & dry. I never really thought about them too much, they just performed as expected.

On my 2015 GS with 1300 klm I have OEM fitted Anakee III. I have read that they grip ok but are prone to noise, some are more sensitive to it than others. So far the grip is ok and the tyres seem similar to my Tourance Next experience.

One major difference between the 13 & 15 with the tyres I had is how much quicker steering the 15 has over the 13. At speed on the 13 it was neccessary to countersteer slightly in advance to properly execute the bend. The 15 is effectly live steering whereas the 13 was slightly delayed. Not sure if related to tyres?
