Hi,

What is the best road tyre recommended for the R1200GS (2012)?

Everyone wil give you their personal recommendation likely to include every make of tyre available. My personal favourite is the Dunlop Roadsmart but I'm trying out PR3's at the moment which are fine so far, but I have not pushed them too far yet.

Michelin PR3 work for me in all conditions except off road of course ,but there not cheap tyres but will give two fronts to one rear so maybe not so bad :thumb2

Try RoadSmart IIs. not cheap but work as well as PR3s in torrential rain, summer heat and down in the low Cs going up and up those lovely wet Alpine passes.

Bt 020's' hard rubber in the middle of the tyre and soft on the outside

Best tyre so far although the anakee was up there to

Original Roadsmarts worked well for me and the 2's should be even better - seem to win most comparison tests.

Road Attack 2's also seem to do well, but not quite as well rated as Roadsmart 2 / Pilot Road 3.

I'll stick to annakee II's on my hexhead, then will have annakee III's on the wethead when it comes. These tyres were developed specifically for the GS, so why try anything else? Although I don't take the bike off road (much:D) at least you have the option whilst running these tyres.:rob:beerjug:

I have tried pr3's on my 11 plate GSA. As a big supporter of pr2's I was expecting big things. I didn't like them. Due to the more rounded profile of the front I found the steering heavy as if they were under inflated ( I checked and they weren't). Must admit at higher speeds in bends and twistys they were impressive. But for me I preferred the exp's.

I quickly swapped back to the exp's which I'm very very happy with. :beerjug:

The front has a much sharper profile which makes the handling much lighter. Wet grip is fine. Dry grip excellent and I've done 5k ( 2 x euro trip to alps and Czech rep) with enough tread to do another trip if I had the time or money. :thumb

These were the oe spec and I'll be sticking with them. I understand that some tyres are recommended by the manufacturer because that's who they are in bed with. But as I understand it BMW approved certain tyres coz that is what is best for the bike. :rob

I've used Maxxis SuperMax on my Yamaha 900. Similar weight to the GSA and much less of everything in the suspension dept so the tyres get a hard time. The front now has 15000 and the back did 6000. Not too shabby for and allegedly cheapo brand. The handling has been fine as well.

Bridgestones and Conti tyres used previously have never made it to 10K on the front and 6K on the back is the best they ever manage with careful use.

There have been reports of tread cracking on Maxxis tyres but Bridgestones aren't immune either.

Avon Azaro / ST combo seems to suit the GS really well, I'm on my 4th set. Very neutral, confidence inspiring in cold/wet and very stable loaded at speed. I (and others) have also noticed that they have a very high level of feedback yet also give a smoother ride than other tyres. Whilst not the reason for me getting them you can also get very good deals on them as they aren't 'this years latest tyre' and they have a pucture guarantee covering the first 1mm of wear.

Having said that I will be trying Roadsmarts when my current pair are worn as they have been getting such good reviews and I'm keen to see if they are even better than the Avons.

My Gs has Anakee 3 fitted from new. The tred pattern is obviously a cross between on/off road. I dont plan to go off road- just crunch the miles on 'A' and 'B' roads therfore looking for the best solution.

I am not quite used to all the abreviations, can I assume 'PR3' refers to Michelin Road Pilot!!?

Thanks for all the responses so far.

I thought the Annakee 3 are being introduced on the new WC GS next year?:nenau
