I like PR4's; got set of trail riders to try next. Bridgestone are also worth a look.

Avon Trailrider is the only tyre that I've changed like for like on my GSA in nearly 40,000kms. I've had PR4, Scorpion Trail 2 and TKC-70, in my opinion the Avon is a more complete tyre than any of the tyres I've tried on the bike.
Stick with the original Tourances and don't believe the nonsense about Chinese manufacture. I have well over 100k on these tyres on various GSes and they perform brilliantly wet or dry. My one regret is I can't use them on my GSA LC.

I'm using Conti Trail Attack 2 after running TKC-70.
The TKC is good on loose gravel & as expected crap on mud.
The TKC-70 and Trail Attack have the same carcass and rubber compound. The latter is more stable at speed and more sure footed in the curves.
The TKC-70 is probably a little better in the wet - when new. It's probably much the same as it wears.
Ive always liked Continental tyres these two are as good as ever.
In comparison I found the original Tourance to feel heavy and stodgy. I've not used the later Tourance Next.

Done untold miles on Tourance (originals) and never found the need to switch.
Trailriders - you'll be suprised how good they are...
I'm running PR4's and they have been superb in the wet & dry; only been on for circa 1800 miles & wear rate is good so far.....however, they do have a compound combination of medium centre/soft outer so long straight stretches will see them squaring off.....
How did the Scorpion Trail 2's do in comparison to the others? Thinking of fitting these to my KTM 1290SA instead of Conti Trail Attacks.
I've enjoyed the Tourance previously, but this TB has Anakee III's fitted, and whilst the performance may be commendable, the road noise from the (whine) isn't. I will swap them out at first service, that's how bad I feel about them.
So no real answer; most modern tyres are good. Make that very good.
Personally I seem to have varied my choice over the years between Conti, Michelin & Dunlop, as they each in turn raised the bar.
My current preference is Dunlop, but it does come down to just that. Personal preference.

The best rear tyre mileage I ever had from a road tyre was the Maxxis SuperMax and very good handling. There was minimal squaring off (better than Continentals) and the shoulders went down at a similar rate. Unfortunately, SuperMax is not available for 19" front and their big trail offering is really not up to much.
I have had two sets of the original Tourance, but after a couple of experiences of the rear becoming a little squirmy in warm conditions and pushing on in the twisties I decided to change. (It might/probably have been down to some factor other than the tyres, but once the seed of doubt had been sown their days were numbered.)
At the time I considered Trailriders and PR4s. I went with the Michelins based on previous experience on sports bikes.

I suspect he is only interested in tyres that will fit his bike. I have got Pirelli P7's on my Mondeo
My favourite road tyres on my GS is the Bridgestone T30 Evo or Dunlop Roadsmart. I don't go off road
If you lo0ok back at previous tyre threads you will soon realize everyone thinks their tyres are best and nobody has tried all of the offerings

I'm sure you are right.
I expect to be doing a lot more long distance stuff in the near future. That will take out the rear tyre pretty damn quickly so it will get replaced with a SuperMax. The last one handled the miles better than Continentals. The front will remain with the Conti Trail Attack and unless I inject a lot of twisty roads should last for two rears. I have no problem running tyres from different manufacturers.
Dont do any off road whatsoever and I'm happy using the Tourance Next, having said that im heavilly influenced by the fact that my local dealer only stocks Metzler and seems to manage to deliver great value prices all year round.
I loved them but my yoke is a Hexhead so not a straight comparison with the crazy powerful 1290 !!!! (the front of the Pirelli cupped badly,that's why I didn't stick with them)

The Conti TKC-70 cupped badly (and in an unusual pattern) on the shoulders but surprisingly still gripped and turned. Though to be fair I was VERY careful in the wet.
