I’ve had Metzler Tourance tyres on the gs as long as I’ve had it, and they have been brilliant until this set, I don’t seem to be getting the grip and reassurance I had before. What does everyone recommend these days?

I have been running Continental Trail Attack 3 for a while now and am very pleased with them. On my second set now.

I never go off road so fitted Continental Road Attacks

excellent grip, although after 4500 the back is fairly done

if you never leave tarmac I am led to believe the Michelin Road 5 tyres are very good, I will try a set next

Great tyre but wear fast , very fast.

the Continentals or Michelins or both ?

I only do 2500 a year so wear isnt a factor, I like to stay between the hedges more

Sorry the PR5 wear fast , I have the 1250 so different bikes but for me the PR5 is a great tyre and on the 1250 leans towards a sporty profile that likes to drop into bends.
The TA3 and the TA2 are a brilliant set of tyres that for me would be my choice , I use the newer TA3 now and they have brilliant grip both wet and dry.
I was out Tuesday and did 350 miles in the damp / wet / leafy / gravel road conditions in mid / north wales , mainly B roads and the tyres (TA3) still went , almost , edge to edge with no dramas.
The conti tyres are for me a great choice , I have fitted a set Tourance next on a spare set of wheels and there okay but are now in the office as an emergency interim set after 500 miles ish.

Had PR5's before recently swapping to Conti TA2's and bike is far better now
Took the PR5's off before my Spanish trip 2 weeks ago and they were half worn
Chucked the PR5's they were crap on an Adv bike where gravel car parks and grass verges come into play

Why have road tyres on a big Adv bike ?

Michelin do market a version of the Road 5 as a trail tyre but only because of the stiffer carcass and sizing not the tread pattern.

I doubt many take a 1150 GS off road, to be honest they are a big heavy lump that are best suited to tarmac where they handle really well and can be pushed on with confidence. Offroad they are top heavy and combined with the high first gear and tall seat a certainty to topple over, hence we all fit engine crash bars.

My 1200 bandit is far better off road than my GS, smaller, narrower and lighter feeling.

But yes a wet grass off camber field is lethal to both and I would be much better with a set of chunky trails fitted. So I avoid if possible.

Can’t comment on that as I have the GS and don’t go near gravel tracks , got an enduro for that malarkey PR5 are great if you feel like pushing a bit as the tyre leans towards sport rather than commute , just saying

Why have something like the TA2 when you never ride off road? :D

I’ll be fitting TA2s to mine when it comes to renewal time because they’re ok for grass fields and our gravel drive so that’s enough for me with the small added bonus that if needs be I can ride it on a basic unmade road when I’m over in Europe.

I have done a few grass fields and gravel drives

I use Continental TKC70
I do a lot of straight line miles and they work well for me.
I do go on gravel and dirt roads as well, not so often, but when I do they have been quite fine for me.

I used to also use Tourance - the original - but they became hard to get and the second version wernt availble at the time, so TKC70 it was.

Last year I had a set put on and did 3500km over the 5days - straight line on bitumen.
I changed them out only 2 weeks ago after about 30,000km / 20,000miles

Because its hotter here, and the road surface is hotter, I run the pressures a little bit higher, helps to keep the tire a bit more rounded, but they went square before the edges were worn

Metz tourance on my R1100GS ,got 7000 miles out the last rear but by then it had seriously squared off ,so decided to try a Mitas E08 rear took a good couple of hundred miles to break in but once it grip ok in the dry took it easy in the wet as I always felt it was going to let go any moment ..never did tho.. but only got 5000 miles out of it and down to the wear bars ..so got a Mitas terraforce r getting fitted this week ,so see how that fares ..

Whats the general opinion on the Bridgestone Battlax Adventure that the 1250GS comes on out of interest? I'd buy another set based on experience so far; they seem good at everything. I'm unlikey to need knobblies on the big bike. Everyone warned be about the Michelin Anakees(sp?) but I've not used them.
