Best way to Radio

Does anyone listen to the radio on their GS? I'm talking FM or better yet DAB?

On long trips I miss it on the bike, particularly the news and talkie stuff. I can get FM via my phone with a lead into the Starcom - but reception varies. The problem seems to be the lead not acting effectively as an aerial.

I've checked out dabonwheels.co.uk for DAB and looked at the Scala kit for FM but would particularly appreciate feedback from early DAB adopters.

If a previous thread deals, please point me to it.

I use an iPod with radio wired in to the Autocom.

This uses the lead as the aerial and is quite effective. The problem here is that it is FM and does not use RDS so as you travel and change area, the frequency changes and you have to stop and manually retune.

Likewise, Ipod with radio connection which is fine for news etc on the way into work. The only problem I find on that short journey is a relatively low volume which gets drowned out at higher speeds.

I use a pure highway DAB radio via the autocom. The provided antenna thing is rubbish so invest in the plug in external one.

Works fine and the antenna is mag mounted to my top box. The antenna works better on a flat metal panel hence the topbox lid. (yes I know the box is alloy but if you glue a bit of steel under the lid it sticks through the alloy well enough).

Is the Highway hardwired to the Autocom and the Autocom hardwired to your headset or is bluetooth involved at anystage. Also where do you locate the Highway to protect from weather but still allow chsnnel selection etc. Whatever I do, I am hoping to fit everything bar the aerial in my detachable tankbag where the Starcom, Phone and Kenwood currently live.

I use an Iphone with a Roberts Robi RDS FM and DAB 'dongle' plugged into it. There's then a 3.5mm jack which connects to my Autocom.

It's by far the best system I've had - still not as good as the system you get on an RT or in any car though.

FM reception is always there, and it can pick up DAB most of the time. I do live in a poor reception area too.

I also use in ear monitors so I notice poor reception (hiss and whatnot) more than perhaps normal helmet speakers. I'm very happy with it, and I've tried dozens of different radios over the years...

This is it:

I mounted controller on the handlebars with some velcro. It isnt waterproof, so I would have to take it off if it chucks it down. Showers have been fine though.

RAM aquabox........

A RAM aquabox (Google it) houses the PURE Highway radio perfectly....

Hard wired to Autocom and wired headset. Zumo gives voice prompts, camera warnings etc Powered from the canbus system (ACC socket) so powers on/off with ignition.

Thanks to all responders, I'll stay as is then for the mo but keep checking for an even better DAB option.

What we all really need though is combi unit, i.e. a top spec waterproof Blue-tooth capable SatNav with built in MP3 and DAB, Bike to Bike comms with min 1000 metre range, Blue-tooth phone or even built in simm slot phone, 32 gig solid state memory with a remote camera jack for two optional plug in cameras. Thick end of 1500 quid no doubt but the market is there.

You could blue-tooth your selected radio station, MP3 music or SatNav audio prompts to any of your fellow riders in range which auto disengages when taking a phone call and have everything you need in one box. I want.. squared!

Data on the move doesn't tend to be reliable enough to sustain a radio stream

Yeah, an FM tuner would be a good addition for the zumo, I think it already is XM capable for traffic related stuff.

+1 for DAB Highway

The DAB highway works well for me. I have a short Hella/BMW to mini usb charger and I have the highway velcro'd onto the headstock behind the ignition. It keeps 99% of the weather off at speed. I have an aerial permanently installed just like Mr G5RJO (good ebay purchase - supplier's name on request) and then a 3.5mm jack into my Autocom. So that's DAB (perfect reception where there is any...ie my aerial will get it if its there), GPS (Zumo), Phone (via Bluetooth to Zumo and Autocom) and MP3 (Zumo). Have to say I think that's the perfect UK audio setup. I would want a PMR446 for the continent tho.

I've got a Zumo 660 hard wired into the Autocom... and listen to MP3's on the Zumo...

The iphone is bluetoothed to the Zumo....

Being a numpty does the dab radio just plug into one of the spare jacks on the Autocom? and is there national dab stations ?

Agree 100%. Here you have zumo 660 with FM traffic but no FM radio. No DAB either. Bluetooth, but no bluetooth bike to bike. No remote control like Parrot. If I was Mr. Garmin i would fire some people. But then TomTom is not much competition either. Maybe Navigator XIII...

Music quality is crap .... Always had Autocom... got a scala G4 set up...and subsequently went back to Autocom
