Hi have a wobble on the rear of my fathers r1150gs, when back brake is pressed the wobble is still there. I was looking at replacing paralever bearings with the motorworks kit , that have the grease nipples built in , is this best way to go?

Also is it asking for trouble to use the bike as is until parts come?

Thanks , David

How long is a bit of string is the answer

if its moving a mm or two then work away "BUT" monitor it for getting worse

if its 5 mm then I would say park it up as the last thing you want is adding a wobbley arse to the joys of leaves and schite on the roads just now

I just put the motorworks ones on the wifes 1100 and they seem very good, but they have only been on for about 9 months although she does use it daily for the commute to work.
They look and feel very well made

If you go for the Motorworks bushes check that there a good fit in each other before fitting them.....mine weren't and I ended up taking them out and fitting new BMW bearings. I only had them in a few weeks....(note to self, get round to sending the bloody things back)

I've always used the standard BMW ones. Nipped up correctly they last ages.

RobC

You could adjust them. Actually just the inner one - with the locknut. You'll need plenty of heat to loosen the loctite.
You'll find some useful guidance here if you search.

Wish that I'd had a more detailed inspection of mine before fitting, they seemed to be tight and well machined so I didn't have any doubts. 6000 miles later I have just removed them to do other work and this is what the left side pin and bush look like :

They were correctly tightened with no sign of any play so I can only assume that this one wasn't machined so well, if the adjustment was wrong then the other side would be scoured as well due to float but it's absolutely fine!

I'll have to get in touch with Motorworks as these were only fitted in early July so there's definitely an issue...I'll be going with OEM now.

Yup, mine look exactly the same....bought and fitted around the same time so possibly a bad batch.

Ok, thanks for that, I'll definitely get in touch with them now as I have yet another shopping list to get on with :blast

Mike. This interesting (and slightly disconcerting!). Did you take it apart because you had play? Out of interest, did you try at any point to get any more grease into them, through the nipple?

Mine seem to be spot on still. But your post is making me wonder what's going on in there

I had noticeable play in mine after only one week. Readjusted but no change. Striped, regressed and reassembled and there was play after a couple of days.
Striped again and cleaned out all the old grease and that's when I found if you fit the two parts together there was considerable side to side movement. There was only two days before I went to Germany so I turned about 40 thou of the two flat faces to reduce play slightly and refitted with spline grease and didn't back off a quarter turn. They were acceptable for the trip abroad but upon return replaced them with stock BM bearings. No play and no adjustment in those since fitting in July.

Sounds like a right PITA!

I've had a different experience (thankfully). I'm guessing around 10k miles and still all tight and free of play.

Maybe it really is s batch problem? Mine were fitted 18 months ago.

I couldn't feel any play on mine so this was found by chance after stripping down to get the gearbox out...again. One side is perfect so I suppose that it has been helping to hold everything enough to make it seem ok, was a matter of time though.
Chances are that it is just a bad batch and that yours are ok Rodin, an easy enough job to take them out for peace of mind though.

Spoke to M/works today and they asked me to send a photo of the wear, they didn't sound surprised either...

Mike.

Sorry to resurrect this but have a quick question, fitted new motorworks bevel bearing kit just now , all went spot on but my play in wheel is still there , maybe a mill of movement at most, play is also there when back brake is pressed on, this should rule out main bearing shouldn't it? I did check motorworks kit for play before fitting so surely can't be paralever bearings can it?

Thanks for any help in advance :-)

I'm not completely clear. You've replaced the bevel box bearings but not the paralever bearings? Is that right?

I can only guess your paralever bearings need tightening slightly (with only 1mm of play you'll probably be able to do this (but they're probably fooked, so I'd just get them out and check/re-grease/replace).

OR the swing arm bearings are in need of attention?

But my money would be on the paralever bearings. Very straightforward and no wrestling with bearing removal like the FD! Can't take more than a couple of hours if you have replacement parts already to hand, that includes tea breaks (but depending on which model you have, be sure to mark the spline /UJ alignment before disassembly )

my old rockster had play too,but the play was up where the swingarm fasterns to the back of the gear box,,same again blowtorch on the lhs big nut next to your left foot peg, slacken the nut and take the big alan bolt up a tad ,then retighten the the big nut
