Hi all,

I noticed metal flakes when changing the bevelbox oil, so span the rear wheel and there was a slight rumble. I've pulled the bevel box apart and both the big and small bearings seem to be in good nick. Since it's open I'll replace the big bearing anyway, my question is would you expect metal flakes with minor bearing wear or should I be looking elsewhere?

Cheers

Matt

PS 850 with 42k on the clock, bevelbox bearings never been done before.

Hi, metal flakes in the oil are a good sign your bearing is on the way out. looks more difficult to change than it is in practice. Just take your time driving the old bearing off, then freeze the gear while you heat new bearing, will just drop right on! Don't forget the seal while your at it. Good luck.

To answer your question, no I wouldn't not with minor wear. Are the bits magnetic?

Also make sure that the shim didn't come off with the old bearing before you drop on the new one:D

Metal flakes generally come from a bearing spalling and on its way to failure.

Odds are it's the 'big' bearing but have you checked the input bearing?

Yup, all stuck to the magnet on the outlet nut. I guess the only other source with be the bevelbox input bearing(s). Not pulled the rest of the bevelbox off the the swing arm yet, as I don't have big enought socket for the paralever bearings.

Looks like it could one of two bearings (5 and/or 7 in the pic)

I'll pull the rest of the box and check how smooth the shaft is. Worst case, off to the garage it goes.

You must also heat the cover plate (if you don't you'll sideload the bearing) before dropping the wheel flange and bearing into it, and then bolt it all in place onto the final drive.
