Hi, i have knocking noise on my 2003 gs1150 adventure. I've removed the oil filter and valve cover. There a very small bits of copper material in them. I suspect the conroad main bearings have worn. Is this engine fecked or salvageable 81000miles
Thanks I'm a newbie

It's like any other engine with plain bearings in that once you hear knocking at least one of the bearings is very badly worn. It is salvageable by regrinding and fitting undersize bearings.
Dismantling is a DIY job, regrinding bearings is a specialist job, re-assembly is DIY if you know what you are doing but I suspect you would need help. Don't carry on using it, you will quickly make it worse.

Thanks, I'm happy dismantling and refitting i bought it recently knowing about the knocking. This my first experience of BMW engines having worked in Harley-davidson and Massey ferguson engines. Regrinding the crankshaft and fitting oversized bearings?

Main bearings and con-rod (big end) bearings are different and give different failure symptoms.

Big-end failure is usually identified by knocking and reduced oil pressure.

Main bearing failure is usually a rumble with reduced oil pressure.

You have to split the engine cases vertically. Once you’ve removed every part of the bike..
These bikes are built around the engine.
Add up all the gaskets and seals needed plus whatever parts required and it’s a lot cheaper buying a used engine.

Every forum has keyboard numpty who feels safe behind the keyboard but wouldn't say boo to a goose in the real world. Have a nice day
keyboard numpty ! :green gri
my 1150 had nearly double the mileage on it when it died ,
someone has pointed out that mains and big ends are 2 entirely different things ,
with 2 entirely different noises .

i scrapped mine because it wasn't a viable/financially fixable bike , engines are getting hard to source . think about slotting a later 1150 into it, if you are determined to keep it.
at least you had the sense to have a look early on .
your next step , should you decide to keep it , is pull 1 side off , and have a good look at the crank , if it is smooth , pull the other side and see if that is smooth too ! ( run your thumbnail along it ) .
it both are smooth , you are onto a winner , if the crank is rough , look for an engine .

Thanks, I've considered a donor engine. Main seal , bearings, regrinding etc would add up I'll pull the heads off tomorrow and inspect. It was supposed to be a winter project😂

Yes going to do this both pistons conrods removed and micrometer etc across crankshaft. Fingers 🤞
