I met a guy during the week who saw a guy come off a bike. He was wearing normal run of the mill levis jeans. He slid down the road when he stopped and stood up he was completely naked from the waist down. Jeans and cacs just disintegrated.

I related this story to another mate who works in insurance, deals with bike accidents alot, who told me he was assessing a case where a biker came off, wearing normal jeans also. He slid down the blacktop on his belly and was totally castrated. Meat and two veg gone - completely!!!!!!
O-U-C-H!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently I've started getting on the bike in my jeans for short runs, like to the shops for a pint of milk sort o thing. Just cant be bothered to change seeing as its only a couple miles there and back. NEVER AGAIN......

How many of you GS'ers wear just jeans on the bike????

Me..! all the time, Mind you they are 'Hood' Jeans, better than textiles.

I've nothing against riders wearing everyday clothes to ride a bike but I do cringe when I see teenage boys/girls on their scooters/mopeds without any protection apart from a helmet. An adult is able to make that decision him/herself but teenagers are just too naive(?) to think about the risks involved. :eek

Being of a certain age I'm just aware of the risks involved so I tend to wear good protective gear all the time regardless of distance or destination. I suppose as you get older (not always wiser though) the thought of severe pain etc makes you more liable to wear everything you can

Isn't the term ATGATT :nenau

What is it Flipfly says... fat riders bounce better? He might have to change that to Fat riders have more to grind away, prior to castration?

I'm a very skinny chap...

Personally I wear what I want, when I want. Entirely my own decision and I know the risks I take when I ride wearing denim jeans, draggin jeans, leathers or armoured textiles.

I do draw the line at flip-flops and my mankini but that's really on the grounds of public decency rather than safety :augie

Lost Skin

I Lost skin from my knee to ankle on right leg in 1994 wearing jeans and now even the spin to the shop for milk is in full gear. What is the stats?? 90% of accidents so close to home?? No point in falling off and getting injured with a grands worth of gear at home!!

A German doctor recently told me when BMW introduced the beeper on the indicator of the 1970's R series, that the reason for this was to get bikers used to the sound of intensive care! Fcuk That!

I was touring the states last year with all my gear on and absolutly cooking when a guy blasted past me on a 'busa. I was doing around 80mph and flew past. Must have been doing at least a ton.

All he had on were sunglasses, swimming trunks and flip flops. No lid, no jacket, nothing.

I've started wearing my Draggin Jeans combats with the heat this week. Nice kit but not sure how good compared to my streetguard trousers. Stopped wearing the airbag jacket too as it's quite warm and now wearing the streetguard jacket.

Heading off to work shortly and I'll have a pair of jeans on. Too nice to wear heavier breeks plus I've nowhere to change in work ( or can't be arsed (sic) !).

I think that, as motorcyclists, we would need to be VERY careful about trotting out this rather tired old line.

This is, essentially, a re-hash of an argument used by ill-informed busybodies against biking in general.

Risk is a reality in all our lives. What level of risk is acceptable and how that risk is managed is (providing it's not putting others in danger) surely an entirely personal thing?

Essentially, what those using this argument are saying is: "This is the level of risk that I, personally, have decided is acceptable. Anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong and is, therefore, an irksome nuisance, whose selfish behaviour is taking away much-needed resources from the more deserving - ie; those whose judgement on 'acceptable risk' happens to coincide exactly with mine".

As I say, the anti-bike brigade use this argument time and again in an attempt to portray all biking as, potentially, an unacceptable burden on the health service and the taxpayer.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but I just think we need to be careful what stones we fling about our wee glasshouse. I think we are already the subject of enough interference without inadvertently lending a hand to those who would perhaps like to legislate us out of existence altogether.

PS: I wouldn't go anywhere without proper gear on, but this is just my choice.

After my crash and subsequent injury @ Llangollen 2 weeks ago, I'm fecking glad to have been ATGATT and although my leg injury has been bad (6 trips to hospital:tears:tears), but it could have been a whole lot worse if I was just wearing jeans and trainers

Stats..

I was told when I was learning to ride..
"You loose an inch of flesh for every second you are sliding along the floor at 30mph".

How many people fall off at 30mph?? More like 50 or 60 in many cases or higher.

I am a ATGATT believer. I have to take the bike out later today to fuel up, so I can then just load it up and head of in the morning for the south coasts and my trip to Normandy. Its frustrating, as its roasting and I just have to go 2miles to the petrol station, but I will still be fully kitted and with my back protector. I can live with being hot and unconfortable, but I have seen what was left of a guy I learnt to ride with when he came off and now walks permenantly with two cames and has had several operations to re-build his legs, hips, knees. The came off at 45mph into side of a car when it T-boned him.
His upper body was pretty ok, busted wrist and collar bone, as he had a jacket on. His lower body wasn't.

The choice is afterall yours.. but is it really worth the risks. If you have the gear. Put it on! :thumb2
