Big pile of dogshit

Good to hear…not about the rain..but wife and I are going over in little over a week from Hull to do Germany staying near Koblenz, then into Luxembourg for a night before going off into France for a night and back to UK from dunkirk.

I hope the weather has sorted itself by then

I hope weather is better for you than the last few days we’ve had. Had to stick to motorways yesterday it was hammering down all day, still raining now for the last leg from Gent to the tunnel, UK has sunshine. The Brussels ring road was its usual chaos.

Germany is drenched, many small hill roads were closed due to land slips or repairs. The Mosel was fast flowing and at its bank edges.

Have a good trip when you go.

Yeah, bit of a contrast to last year when going over the Alps into Lichtenstein and Austria was high 30’s!
Will have to hope there’s a spell of dry weather for the next week otherwise we may not be able to take the quieter routes we hoped to take.
That said, we can still enjoy some great food and wine and a few days away from this country.

As feedback, I’m currently in Luxembourg/Germany and the bike has started reliably every single time, even after accidentally stalling when hot it fires straight back up exactly as hoped for.

I’d say the new Hybrid battery is brilliant.

……..Now if only it would stop raining !

Yesterday and this morning it was coming down heavily across Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. On reaching the border with France near Dunkirk this morning it was like a beautiful summers day, riding in to clear blue skies. The ride home this afternoon across country from Kent to Hampshire was a delight.

I hope a proper summer arrives soon right across Europe.

Your timing must have been spot on to make kent to Hampshire a delight;

Let’s just say it was a “target rich environment” for having fun and working the bike to its potential on warm dry roads.

What`s the mid-term verdict on the new battery Pukmeister?
Had any non-start events since fitting it?

I'll let Adam speak for himself but I also purchased one just after Adam and I've had zero issues since.

I could immediately tell (and still can) how much more faster the bike was starting (zero struggle). Despite the battery it replaced being almost brand new (and kept on a CTEK.5.0) this new battery has not struggled once and that is even after a few hours of stopping and starting around a city.

I 100% can say with confidence that the battery Adam found has solved my starting issue. I would highly recommend changing to it to help the starting issue but the weight saving and space saving also helps if you have other accessories connected to the battery.

I can only echo those comments, the hybrid battery is a beast of a thing despite its smaller size, and has no special charging requirements like a pure lithium does. The bike bursts into life at every repeated press of the starter, whether
hot, cold, or has been left standing for weeks.

I am very pleased with mine.

100% agree, best battery I ever bought, by a lot! And I owe it to you, @Pukmeister, you led me to that battery with your posts. Thank you!

But remember, all:
The root cause of hot starting problems is exhaust VALVE CLEARANCE, as mentioned in the past by someone, I don't remember who exactly.
I have had the problem too and it is a fact well known by BMW mechanics. When not adjusted correctly, and despite being in the acceptable range of adjustment, the valves don't let enough pressure out during startup phase and the electrical starter motor just doesn't have enough force to push the cylinders. Too much compression. It then sounds like a flat battery. But it isn't! It's a simple mechanical issue solved by a simple adjustment, with the benefit of understanding why it all happens in the first place :)

Have your exhaust valve clearance adjusted to the max value in the range and you will never face this issue again.
Added benefit : my 1250 GS works MUCH better. It nows has 95 000 km on the dash, I've bought it when it had 10000 km and I can safely say that it has never worked that well! Going home from the BMW workshop, I was simply baffled by the difference! It was more of a difference than when I had it remapped in Germany a year ago.

Couple that little intervention on your valves with a Motobatt hybrid battery and your bike will never ever have any starting issue again.

I thought I had battery issues with my Hexhead, but after installation of the new MotoBatt MBYZ 16HD it hasnt changed the starting characteristics. It starts, but not with the vigour I would like.
Anyway....you might like to know, that the battery I removed was a Odyssey PC535 and was dated 09 13! incredible.
These batteries are £150 ish and the Motobatt is £79.90 from Motorworks so the choice is yours. I wll say the 535 is slightly bigger and requires a small amount of mods to fit in some cases.
Hope this is interesting

I had a Hex too, ended up with 150 000 km on the dash haha
But this one never had any starting issue. Any issue at all, actually. Except for a worn shaft at 135 000.

It is one of the most (if not THE most) reliable engine produced by BMW over the last 20 years.
Actually, even though I'm getting off track here, I must say my favorite GS was either the Hex or the DOHC. Fork felt better, air engine sounded fantastic, the whole machine was a lot lighter... My 2013 LC with the light flywheel was very fun too, it revved like a maniac.

To be honest, the ONE thing I could not live without today is the cruise control. I cover long distances very often and doing 12 hours straight without it seems like a torture, now.

This one is the Motobatt we are discussing here, though. The hybrid one, Lead + Lithium. It's a bit more expensive, but it really is a clever setup :)

And here is a link to a detailed review with an interesting comparison table between stock Yuasa, Motobatt MHTX16 and Antigravity ATX-12 Lithium.

It summarizes quite well why the MHTX16 is a good choice. It packs both Ah and angry cranking power :)
