Have your exhaust valve clearance adjusted to the max value in the range

Are you sure the valve clearances are best set to the maximum to help with this problem?
I would have thought that setting them near to the minimum so that the exhaust camshaft lobe with the decompressor mechanism has the most effect and lifts the valve off it’s seat the furthest thus allowing the most compression to be lost to ease starting?

Exhaust valve clearances are 0.34 - 0.41mm, what did your mechanic set them to?

I DO know that he went to one extreme in the range. Is it minimum or maximum, I cannot say. Now that you mention it and while I am writing that down, I seem to remember he actually said minimum...

But yes indeed, the idea is to let out as much pressure as possible to make it easier for the starter motor to crank the engine.
My BMW dealer, based in France, said they even had an internal note regarding this issue. Should be a pan european note. So for anyone having this problem ever, if you go to BMW, they should understand right away what the problem is and how to solve it. And if you are a savvy mechanic and want to do this yourself, I guess go for minimum. Seems to make more sense indeed.

It is one of the most (if not THE most) reliable engine produced by BMW over the last 20 years.
Actually, even though I'm getting off track here, I must say my favorite GS was either the Hex or the DOHC. Fork felt better, air engine sounded fantastic, the whole machine was a lot lighter... My 2013 LC with the light flywheel was very fun too, it revved like a maniac.

To be honest, the ONE thing I could not live without today is the cruise control. I cover long distances very often and doing 12 hours straight without it seems like a torture, now.

Yes, the LC was not reliable at all. I meant the hex! But I mixed 3 models in this post, so I understand it wasn’t clear at all haha sorry

I initially wrote in reply to AJCCornish, who mentioned he owns a hex and then I started digressing, as often…

My LC had the starter engine jammed in the engine when I was commuting on the motorway. Bloody danderous. Sold it a month after that. And it was « only » 125 000 km.
