I've recently bought an 1150 GS  , which i picked instead of a GSA (mostly due to budget but actually thought the bike was better suited to road riding with the 6th gear, etc). The only thing i realy wanted from the GSA was the bigger tank, which leads me on nicely to my first question- Have any of you ever put a larger tank on a standard GS? And if so, how much did it cost you. I've seen on the Touratech website a 42 litre tank selling for a massive £850, thats before fitting and having it sprayed. I would expect ordering a GSA tank through BMW would'nt be any cheaper.

Question 2- I picked the standard GS because i cover a huge amount of road miles. Two weeks in however and the GS is bringing out my more adventurous side and i'm dying to throw on some off road tyres and take it up to Dartmoor. Does any one know the rules around Dartmoor regarding this and is there any other like minded riders who meet up for an off road ride out?

All in all though i'm realy pleased so far- I finally like my commute, which takes about 30 minutes less and feel the big beemer is far superior to my last bike, which was a CBR, and i thought that was good! :bounce1

Thanks for the info that you all posted last time, Does this mean i'm now in the Club :nenau

Search and yee will find..

If you do a search for 33ltre tanks and large tanks on the forum you will find a whole loads of info.. yes many people have in simple terms. There are a few options to purchase..

As for offroading, ask in the offroad section or your regional area section.. someone will know..

Oh you might find a bigger tank in the "Forsale Section" but you will have to register as a site sponsor to post there, well worth the cash. Good luck and all the best..

For the 1150GS, I think you have 3 options:

1. The 31 L (or ist it 33L) Adventure tank
2. The 41 L Touratech tank
3. The 36 L Kaoko tank ( www.kaoko.com )

I recently bought the Kaoko, but still have to install it.

But, NOT CHEAP: together with some other stuff (handlebar risers, cruise control and tank protectors) it cost me 1900,- EUR to get it to Belgium (approx. 1250,- GBP)

That's including painting, stickers and BMW logo, airfreight & handling costs, import taxes, VAT (which is 21% in Belgium) ... and I had to collect it from the airport myself. (No problem because I work at 5 minutes from it)

Quality is excellent and weighs almost nothing.

And a calibration plate for the fuel level lever is also included:

You could just stop and fill up the std one, have a break anyway and be happy in the lnowledge you've saved a lot of money :D

Could you really on a commute empty a full tank without stopping for a pee at least ?

I sometimes struggle to get over 100km without stopping for a break :o

Got a GSA tank in black, vgc, for £350.

You can get 31.9 ltrs into it with the filler neck drilled.

As far as I understand the TT tank doesn't actually take anywhere near as much as advertised. Look on eBay Deutschland if you want one.

I certainly found it a lot more convenient having the bigger tank. Not really for the range alone but more coz it allowed you to be more flexible as to where and when you wanted to stop so you didn't end up always scrabbling around looking for fuel at predetermined points.

Thanks for all your help.........think i'll leave the tank alone for now, seems like a lot of money for a few extra litres. Like the look of Dartmoor though, if anyone is off up there soon, give me a shout

Does the tank have internals I need to fit 1100??

save your money and keep the std tank, the range is more than enough unless your going to very very remote parts of the world .

I am preping for big trip in 2 years ?months [HOPE ]modifying lots of bits required [tank ally boxes ,sargent etc.1100gs

Hi Pastyman, I'm in Liskeard but commute down to Helston pretty much every day. I may of past you a few times, you dont ride a yellow 1200 GS do you....................? :thumb

Why do you want/need a bigger fuel tank? How far do you think you'll ride without a break or within sight of a petrol station near Dartmoor? Serious 'commuting' question, unless of course you're planning on commuting in certain (very) far flung third world countries (??).

For your interest my commute is 115 miles a day, hence having to fill up every second day with a standard tank. The bigger tank would just be more handy with less fuel stops. And the other thing about far flung third world countries- is'nt that what the GS was made for  ? or is it just a road bike? :nenau I hope i have the spirit to 'venture' past Dartmoor on my GS one day.........I'm just worried about finding petrol stations :flush

Sorry Marc, my reply wasnt indended as being cheeky :D Yes, that's a serious commute. I do roughly 90 miles a day, sometimes more, and I suppose filling up every two days is a pain, although I'd really need to find another 15 - 20 litres more (say a 40 + litre tank to fill up every three to four days) to make the change worth it. I'd really need to hate petrol stations to hack the cost, and then where would I buy my smokes? ;) :D I'd also miss the lighter overall weight of the standard bike :) As for the GS being more of a road bike, I'd say it makes a better road bike than round the world tourer as standard, especially with the 'small' tank ;)

You dont need to be worried about finding filling station's,and if you are worried carry a a extra fuel can with you.

the biggest worry is picking up a fully loaded GS  If your on your own in the middle of no where :rob

John C, yeh, I now what you mean about a 40 litre+ tank size, the cost is only realy worth it if your going to go for the bigger Touratech tank but to buy one brand new at over £800 is out of the question (if anyones selling one second hand give me a shout!). it does look impressive, but must mess the handling up a bit, it must weigh a ton! :thumb

It's not compulsary to fill a big tank up if you have one :D .

But it is nice being able get from london to lands end in one go. And only having too fill up once a week - Choice is good :D
