hi people,i was out today on my 08 1200gs and as i was coming off the slip road on the m56-a49 warrington the bike cut out for no reason.its had all the recalls done and was upto date on servicing its done 16000 mls and up untill this been fine.it took 3 goes of the starter to fire up but was fine after that even getting up to 100:augieish mph for a short distance.did another 30ish miles after with no probs,DO YOU THINK THIS WAS A ONE OFF.:confused:
 
It could be lots of things, but my guess is either the ignition key wasn't fully turned to "on" (indent position), or it could be the early onset of FPC (fuel pump controller module) failure, or maybe a short circuit/water in the sidestand switch electrics whilst in gear.
 
key an eye on the ignition key, ive got 2 other keys on my fob and at high speed they flap about a bit and on 2 occasions the wind has turned the key enough to turn off the ignition, i shat myself when it did it at 90 down the A3! :eek:
but now i try and tuck the key under the bars so they dont flap.

if the bikes had all the recalls then cant really see any other problems? :nenau

since having a new fpc the bike has only done about 1000mls,my 05 gs 12 had the fpc probs and once they started within 5mls the bike was dead. 9 hr ride home from cardiff on a tow truck was the pits esspecially as it was a sunny day.:blast
 
might be the key in the wind syndrome just recently put a nice new bmw keyfob on my keys and have noticed it flops about abit.:blast

Happened to me on a few occassions bit of velcro sorts it out.

hope thats all it is, going to the iom in march, then touring europe august. will just have to put some big mls on the bike and see whot happens(i have got full breakdown cover just in case):augie
 
Its always worth carrying a spare FPC. Its an easy enough job to fit in the event of a failure.
 
just a quick update,did 200mls today and not a hick up,hope thats the end of it thanks for all responses.:thumb2

however this was how my FPC went, the bike cut out on a couple of occasions, difficult to start,then it was fine, however it went in Berlin on a europe trip, 10 mins after getting off the autobahn, bike was totally dead. Spend the £65 get a new FPC fitted its a 2 mins job, then stop worrying, mine ( touch wood) has been fine since the FPC was fitted and Im riding it all the time in this lovley mild winter we are having, arent heated grips great.
 
Interesting, I had the exact same thing happen to me, luckily I was about 200 yds from home and coasted to my garage :). I tried the starter a few times whilst rolling and there was nothing.
Got off outside the garage, few presses of the starter and still nothing. Left it a minute or so and she fired up fine. That was about October, not had any problems since, although it's had very little use to be honest.

All updates have been done including antenna ring and I have new FPC fitted. Never had a moments trouble with the bike, FPC and Antenna ring never caused a problem but were replaced as a precaution under the recall.

I put it down to the battery, bike is 3 years old and I know I am on borrowed time with the battery, if I leave bike for a few days I have to charge it to get a start out of it, if the bike is in regular use after that its fine. I will get a new one when I get chance.
 
FPC fault devolping IMHO. :rob

Search the threads on this, many of the symptoms you state are there and they become FPC failure. Many peopel have intermittent failure until the final death of the FPC.

Tell the dealer to do it again if he says he has already done it, My dealer said it was fine but it went on to fail. :eek:
 
My 07 1200 GS was beginning to run a little rough over a period of around three months and cut out a few times on idle at traffic lights etc., which meant I had to blip the throttle to keep it going.
Then it began starting badly which I assumed at the time was the cold mornings.
I never thought it could be the FPC although I carried a spare.
It was recently serviced and the original FPC was replaced with my spare (recall) and it is now a completely different bike.
So much so that I decided to keep it rather than upgrade to the 2010 model I had as a loan bike for the day.

So - FPC's can take a long while faltering before they fail completely.
