Bike dropped :(

Mine got `blown over` in wales a few months ago - screen, bar, mirror and a few brackets £400

it aint cheap to repair pal!

Thanks for the optimism mate, that makes me feel a whole lot better!

I don't think a few minor scuffs warrants replacing the hand guard, mirror and crash bars - it ain't that bad!

I'll put this down to experience and just do what I can with the scuffs.

Always on the cards to be dropping ye bikie cant think of any of the "big" bikes that i have not dropped at some point . This does actually affect my buying decisions as i simply would not buy a bike that is going to take a lot of damage from a simple drop. The adv1200 does not seem to break easily !
neither does The paneuro st1300 ( its got metal bars that are hidden behind a wee wing looking thing set low down on it) it simply lies on that and the fairings and panniers dont touch down at all.
It has always seemed nuts to me that manufacturers sell bikes that can take serious damage with a simple drop. I believe that there was a question asked in the Australian parliament prompted by the motor insurers bureau as to why the motor dept were giving type approval for bikes to be imported that (at the price of plastic pannels) could effectivly be a constructive write off from a simple drop. I dont mind a few wee scars and if i was buying a used one it would not concern me as much as overall condition and service work

Dropped my 15 month old GSA 3 times now - combination of a big bike & a short arse :D
The first time was the most painful - a year ago today when I dropped it on my ankle crossing a French Ford.

Off to hospital again in the morning to get some of the screws taken out of the ankle .

Bike is fine though - and through neccessity, I've perfected that technique of walking it upright backwards :thumb2

Sorry about your accident, cant believe I havnt dropped mine yet, had 2 really close shaves on my mudbath of a drive .
How easy or hard is it to pick up ? I did a search, but came up with nothing. Is there a technique or tips ?

Dropped a GS on a test drive. Nice sunny ride, christmas lights start happening on the dash board. Stop. Put side stand down. New bike and didn't notice the side stand popped back up again since spring was still new. Over she goes! Slightly embarrassed the salesman looked happy that I was now "committed". Managed to get full luggage and top box thrown in :D.

Too true:clap

I've always said that the only people that don't drop them, are those that don't ride them.

you didn't say that on the beach in Ireland......... :pullface

:kissy2

Learned this at the off road school and a very small woman picked up a GS. Leverage is your friend. Lock the handle bars in the direction in that faces up. Squat and bend the knees. Grab the handlebars at the further point away from the bike. Lift. Up she goes.

FFS has anyone any advice on how the op should best deal with the damage??

enough with the i droped my gs one day:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah

Mine on Saturday, going from one side of the track to the other side whilst opening up my visor, over a sodden strip of grass at walking pace =

Broke support ring for the spot light, £16 to replace and a few more battle scars :)

Info for the opening poster, you can get plastic polishers and this one from nippy is supposed to be pretty good, but if its scratched through the paint there's not much you can do. If i was you i wouldn't worry about it, you might get all the scratches out and do the same next week. Wait until you going to sell or trade it for a new one, and then do all the scratches and scrapes in one go.

Thanks for all the comments and advice so far guys, I appreciate that.

I think leaving whatever damage there is until the time comes to sell is probably a good idea. The immediate problem, however, is that if the scratches on the crash bars are left untreated then this introduces the risk of corrosion / rust.

I thought it might be a good idea simply to use touch-up paint, if only to prevent any corrosion? I don't think BMW do touch-up paint any longer but does anyone know of any particular paint I can use that's a close enough match?

We were on the top of the Yorkshire Dales up by Hawes, put the side stand down, got off the bike and walked away small gust of wind and the bike fell over :blast. the moral is if it's on the side stand it's in 1st gear:rob. Luckily just a few scratches on the head guard

If you are concerned about corrosion I would get some rust-proofer into those scratches. Chances are it will then go blue. If the scratches are deep enough I'd rub a bit of Isopon into them and smooth them off. I've used humbrol enamel paints before now, and I found one that was a really good match for the 1200 headers. I'm by no means an expert, and I've no real experience of this but I often rub paint onto something like this with a rag - its easier to blend in and more often than not it works!

Good luck!

Dropped my 1200GS a while ago after cleaning it - lost my footing going to move it off the side stand in the wet patch, and over it went on its right side. Annoyingly it went over through a new £600 teak patio table reducing it pretty much to matchwood and also took out its indicator, screen and side panel. That was about a grand that drop.

Later in exactly the same circs I dropped my F800gs and it hit my xl250 on the way down and susatined EXACTLY the same damage as the 1200gs. That'll be £400 thank you sir....the xl250 was untouched.

In terms of damage repair I have had limited success lightly using 1200 wet and dry on the black plastic parts and then use a coloured polish (black obviously) to further help. In terms of painted plastic panel damage sometimes a bit of T-cut helps but you would be surprised how much a touch of normal polish and elbow grease can improve things.

I dont bother on my GSA - it gets ridden as is - gaffer tape, scratches and all - way cooler!
