Bike hire?

Has anyone any i dea of anywhere in the north east that does bike rental. My brother is coming over from the U.S. in August and i suggested a day or two of pootling as while we've ridden together over there, weve never explored the uk together.
Seems to be plently of independant hire place down south, cant find any up here.
