Was out for a short run on my 05 1200GS the other day and the bike just dies, I think the clocks shut down as well but I was that taken back with trying to get pulled in to a safe spot that I am not sure.
Turned the bike off and on again and it started so was able to ride the twenty odd miles home.
 So is this a fuel pump controller or some other problem ?

Sounds electrical.

If the FPC is throwing a wobbly the clocks still work.

Sounds like a loose connector somewhere?

:nenau

Are you running any accessories?Could have been the onboard electics shutting down due to an overload :nenau.
I have had the aux circuits shut down whilst riding but never the whole bike.
It usually sorts itself when the ignition is switched on then off again.

If you have anything other then the ignition key and alarm fob on you key ring going over bumps or cats eyes will jolt the ignition barrel to off when you look at the key it looks like it is fully on but at a very slight angle. It happend to me 3 times before I relised the BMW Leather key thingy was too heavy.

I also got the barrel swaped out as it felt different to other 1200gsa I tried at the dealers

Hope this help

I do have spots on that are wired to the battery with relay connected to the side lamp wire. Come to think of it this was the first time that I have run the bike with the heated grips since fitting the spots so might be an over load ?

I sent an email to the technical bods at BM concerning wiring spot lights and GPS direct to the battery via a relay, would this upset the CANBUS system. It worked well on my F800ST, but now am concerned after reading this post for my 08GS

I have had a response from the Technical Manager and he has advised that if all of the consumers you listed were run directly from the battery, this will cause problems to the CANBUS system. The battery level is monitored by the ZFE unit (Central Chassis Electrics) whilst the engine is running. If there is a drain on the battery that the ZFE unit is not directly measuring, it will regulate the alternator output to compensate for this, but after a while it will start to 'power down' some of the circuits that it operates to preserve battery life.
Your Dealer can advise you on the connection points as part of the ZFE programming will need to be amended so that it knows that the additional equipment is fitted.

How does one wire in accessories in so the ZFE takes this into account for charging the battery?

I had something similar on mine when changing from 1st to 2nd gear, everything died including the clocks, apparently there can be a faut with the gear selector that can cause this problem.

i had this happen just after the fuel pump controller was replaced - bike just cut out entirely at 80mph - everything died - got it to a safe stop but not a nice experience. Turned out it was related to to fpc - sorry can't be more technically helpful than that but it was all replaced foc by BMW and I am now confident that my bike has given up trying to kill me :bounce1

My '04 1200GS has Hella Micro DE spotlights wired off the battery via an inline fused relay. The relay switching circuit takes a feed from the headlight via the handlebar switch.

I have used my bike with GPS, Autocom and Hella MicroDE's all running together and still have the leather Keyfob fitted (ruined the top yoke finish though). Touch wood apart from one incidence of my FPC failing, it has never thrown a wobbly before. Maybe the Hawker Odyssey battery helps in my case??

When the FPC died I had just used the killswitch and when reset the bike wouldn't start.

I don't know if the ZFE uses current load sensing, or just monitors the battery voltage ?

Surely the alternators output is by a voltage regulator which controls the amount of excitation, and the current produced is dependant upon the load applied (up to its maximum 600 watts /720 GSA)?

I can't see how an alternator can 'force' amps into something that doesn't require them?

I had additional lights (spots and fogs), autocom and Zumo connected direct to the battery via relays (for the lights) through a Centach fuse panel for almost 2 years with not a problem on my 2006 1200GS. :nenau
