Would anyone be able to help me with an insurer who doesnt want to charge an arm and a leg to insure my bike while its away from home. I'm having an absolute bastard of a job finding someone who will charge a reasonable amount for this. I believe the problem stems from having what they call a dual address or postcode, although where the bike is stored is only a storage address not where i live. I've got 6 years no claims and was sort of expecting a reasonable quote, but sadly thats not the case.

Bike is an 800 GS Adventure (t)

P.S. I could just change my address to where the bike is stored, as the garage ( a proper brick or concrete garage by the way, aparently that makes a difference too) its in is owned by a member of my extended family, but I dont want to, as that would be fraudulent, which I would not be happy about.

Where the bike is kept is anywhere from 1 to 3 miles away from where i live, by the way, if it helps.

Any help appreciated , as pulling my hair out here. Not that I have much left now!!!!!!!:augie:thumby::bow

My son had this issue. His GS is kept in my garage which is 30 odd miles from where he lives. The insurance company thought he was trying to pull a fast one and not have to pay the premium associated with living in the centre of Edinburgh. They asked him how he was going to get to our house to ride his bike and relented when he said he'd drive here in his car. I've messaged him to ask who he's insured with and I'll report back.

I had similar issues with keeping my 2nd Bike at a friend's place in Devon. In the end had to fit an alarm (Thacham Cat 1) to satisfy the company I was with (AVIVA via Devitt). That cost me £300 but there was no additional premium to add it to my existing bike policy. This year I changed to LV (my car is insured with them) and they were very easy to deal with and offer great cover at a very competitive price. The only thing about LV is that I think you have to be an existing customer to insure your Bike with them - I have been with them for car insurance for a number of years, also home and contents so was easy for me.

This may not help you at all!

Why not just insure it at your address, then if it ever gets stolen, you can just say you were staying at your relatives address that night?

There are 2 parts to this reply. Firstly a massive thanks to GreatScot for even mentioning LV. I phoned them and they quoted me £113 fully comp £200 excess and protected no claims bonus Including having the bike at my uncles garage. They said if the bike were ever to be stolen at my home address they would not have an issue with it, so quite a happy bunny right now.

Part 2 to Nutty, My uncle is old school and would never even entertain "bending" the truth He says he has morals and wouldnt bend them for anyone... Allegedly.. Anyway, Rich not seen you for ages, Let me know if you are out and about this weekend, seems like you owe me for a sticky bun or 2 after slipping over on the oil patch left by your departing transmission oil from your GS when it decided it had an incontinence issue and wet itself all over Loomies Car park, errr something like that anyway.... PM me and you'll get the new number, assuming you want to.....

Glad LV worked for you, Mark. They're an excellent company to deal with and their Bike policy is one of the best I've seen - low excesses, good cover for accessories (including helmets, leathers etc.) and no issues about straightforward modifications, nor outrageous charges for change of address etc. I think they will make inroads into the Bike insurance market as word gets around. I have no link with them, by the way, except as a satisfied customer.

This is the good stuff at the heart of this site, not all of the whingeing and whining. Good to see :thumby:

.

That one reminds me of a mate in 80's , his GPZ750 was insured at his home address ............. a shit area in Jarrow with a high risk postcode and he even told the company it was kept in the back yard.

Prior to a holiday he took it up to his fathers address in rural Northumberland (nice safe post code and an alarmed attached garage )to service it and sort out new tyres, house got screwed and the bike was the only thing stolen .

Insurer initially refused to pay out as it wasn't at his home address and he came close to ending up over £2000 out of pocket, took months of wrangling and the involvement of his solicitors before he eventually got paid out.

Nowadays I reckon he would be p*ssing against the wind trying to claim

BMW insurance did a dual postcode address for my LC - told them it normally spent 3 nights at one address and 4 at the other - they based the premium on the 'worst' post code.

Carole Nash were fine when my dad told them he was keeping his bike at my house, some 45 miles away.

No charge, no change in premium.

I had this problem with the RAC and Bennetts. I am now with Hastings Direct and they don't care where you have the bike as long as it's in a locked garage.

Insurance, highway robbery
I simply rang Bennetts and told them that my garage wasn't at my home address and gave them the postcode of the house opposite.

Mines 1 mile away insured with Bikesure no issues.

I do check every day as I pass by it to commute to work.

I had the same scenario..i got the best deal from Carole nash..my bike was approx 3 miles from my home address...

I have twelve of my bikes currently insured with Carol Nash. I keep four in the garage at my mother's house thirteen miles away. I haven't had to specify which, just that at any one time four of the twelve will be there. They were fine with that and at no extra charge, however, they may have in mind motorcycle theft is almost non existent here.
