Bike let me down this morning

Mine is 2021 1250. Sometimes it sits for two weeks in garage when I'm away beacuse of the work but it always starts, no problem. I have trickle charger but haven't used it on this bike yet. Ah, and no alarm or tracker on the bike.

Mine has a Biketrac. The consumption is very little - the tiny internal battery was still active more than two months after being disconnected from the bike.

In my experience, it's a myth that they flatten batteries quickly.

I guess the bottom line has to be, why not use a trickle charger regardless?

Its an adventure bike. Not very adventurous if you are tethered to a trickle charger!

Could this be another case of VMW using customers to do the research.

As above. I think it was from September when they were due to cease fitting them. I don't think we know why (though I fully appreciate that many don't want one anyway), but it could be down to the chips shortage.

The battery doesn’t know that though.

Batteries do just die; it happened after 4 years on my 1200; but on a 21 bike, that is a bit unusual. Hope you get a solution and let us know if you find out anything from BMW about their current choice of battery.

Hmm. I wonder if I should swap the Motobatt out of my 1200 into my 1250

Indeed - there are also claims out there that Biketrac trackers flatten the battery within days.

I’ve had two (admittedly not 1250) bikes in the last couple of years that behaved very differently. The F850GS had a Datatool Trakking Adventure fitted after purchase and my current 750GS has the Datatool Stealth S5 that BMW have been offering free. Bikes were in UK stock and purchased a month apart so likely a similar build date. The battery would drain flat on the 850 in about 9 days or so (caught me out once) but once charged starts first time, the 750 can be left for 3 weeks or more without charging and is fine. Maybe a duff battery or maybe the way the tracker is fitted. Who knows?

It’s with the dealership now so I will wait and see their findings. Half expecting them to blame the Hex Ezcan as the culprit! I had exactly the same self fitted farkles on my recently departed R1200GSA and that would start after 4 months without being started, or connected to a trickle charger. My new 1250GSA has both a BMW alarm and the Datatool Stealth Tracker (BMW supplied) fitted to it. I’ll keep you informed of the outcome.

Leaving what connected, the Ezcan? Bit hard to disguise the Denali lights, sound bomb and other bits and associated wiring! They know I have it fitted, simply unplugging it wouldn’t hide it.

Err I removed them months ago and the fault still persists.

Mines a 21 plate with the tracker, alarm, stalled the bike at some lights within a couple of weeks owning it and it would not restart.
Seemed as though to much compression or not enough juice in the battery. waited 5 mins with ignition off and restarted ok.
Was ok after and mentioned it at 600 mile service and they replaced the battery, 6 months later and 5000 miles later all still good.

I would have disconnected the hex, and taped it, told them it was disconnected months ago to check the fault.

Depends on the dealer, some will actually ignore it and check the bike. A shit one will just blame all of your attachments,

Bike is only a month old, so that wouldn't have washed. They also know I have a Ezcan fitted as I stripped all the farkles off my old bike and was discussing with the techs a decent harness route for the new bike when I picked it up.

Bit of an update from the dealer yesterday. Battery has been charged and checked and is fine. They are now looking into what is drawing the power from the battery. I spoke to Datatool and they told me the draw from the Stealth unit is less than 1mA when in sleep mode. Sleep mode activates once the ignition is switched off and only 'wakes up' if an event occurs such as the bike moving.

In their FAQ section on their website, Hex Ezcan say this 'I noticed that the ezCAN’s green LED blips every few seconds while the bike is off, is this something I should be concerned about?
Not at all, the maximum draw of those blips is 800μA (microamps)/hour. In order to completely drain a 12V battery, the ezCAN would need to be connected to it for more than a year.'

Anyone know the current draw of the BMW alarm........?
