Bike Magazine Tyre Test

My GSA12 came with Anakees as OE fitment.

I've got 2600 miles on them but am off to Germany which will add another 2000 miles.

I'm tempted to swap them for 607s,especially as the Anakees didn't feature highly in the Bike test.

Will my rear Anakee still be ok approaching 5000 miles ?

Ta

(PS First GS,so no previous experience of these tyres)

I'm on ~4300 miles on an Anakees, and maybe it's the way I ride :o but there's loads left. I reckon I'll get at least that again.

I got 9000 miles from my Anakees. I thought they were better than 607s. Battlewings are my favourites if you never go for the muddy stuff. You's be wasting your money to change the tyres now as none of them are bad.

Thanks Bones.

It's just that when i had my KTM 950 ADV S ,the rear was pretty shagged by 4500 miles.

I'll leave the Anakees on and see what they are like when I get back.

Cheers.

Tyre wear on Battlewings on a 1200 GSA. Plenty of two up riding :) not too many motorway miles :) :) and at 1167 miles the rear is at 6.5mm from 8mm, and the front's at 4mm from 5mm.

So, I reckon on current wear rates in and assuming change with 2mm left the rear will last 4668 miles, and the front 3501 miles. That's total, not from now :(

The only thing better than Tourances I've got to say about them so far, is that the chicken strips disappear really quickly :)

Tourances on my 1150 were good but I had problems with the front ones (one was oscillating and the replacement started to crack badly around the blocks ), I tried Distanzias and had them on for two seasons, initially i was impressed but in the wet they gave some heartstoppers and the rear would step out in the dry when pushing on out of corners.
Went over to Michelin Road Pilots early last year and have found them to be excellent, the front looks set for 9000 plus and the rear was only changed at 5000 ( with less than 3mm wear from new ) because I wanted radial for the rear of my katana 1100

I'm not sure that you can extrapolate total mileage by how many miles you get out of the first 1.5mm. Wear rate would slow as the profile flattens methinks. I've done 4000 miles on my Battlewings and although I can't be arsed to measure the tread depth, they look maybe half worn ish :nenau

... My 2p ... or not 2p

... Haven't read Bike article yet

... OE - 607s, very competent road handling wet and dry, no off road use, short life 4500 miles

... Tourrance, less confidence inspiring wet and dry, seemed good at cutting through loose shit and light slime on roads/tracks and finding a nats of grip underneath, assuming you're not nailing it. Excellent life 9,000miles

... Tried another GS12 with Annakees, more inspiring road performance than tourrances, wet and dry. Limited trial no real idea of life expectency, been told it's lower than the Tour'ce life though 6000?

... Bridgestone 020s - Brilliant road handling all weathers, can't handle loose of slimey surfaces very well, due to change them when I get back 4,500miles

... What next?

... If I expect only clean road miles, 020s again, but I could be tempted to give the Road Attacks a spin (subject to bit of knowledgable opinion from the Tossers as to their wet weather credentials)

... Might get a chance to travel further afield and get on the odd dodgy surface, in which case I'd go for the Tourrances again, they seem pretty tough and I won't need TKCs or any other real dirt tyre.

Confused it is that I am

I have a 16-month old 1200GS, which I have owned for under 3-months. It had 7,000 miles on it when I bought it and I have put almost 2,000 more miles in. It has Trail Wings on at the moment and the rear is heavily squared (it was when I got it - honest) and is now down to a couple of mm in the centre, the front looks something over half-worn. I am pretty sure these must have been the OE fitment. I am a reasonably 'enthusiastic' road rider and have noticed that the rear is now graining significantly at the edges of the blocks. It also skips and slides a bit when driving hard out of corners - roundabouts mainly - but this may be in part due to the squaring and resultant reduced contact patch when coming back upright. Not sure about the wet grip - seems OK-ish but not great.
What I want is the best wet and dry grip (in that order), regardless of wear-rate, dual-sport tyre (I also intend to do some gentle off-roading too - might as well now I've bought the bike!).
The BIKE test has raised more questions than answers - no wet test - why?
Torn between Trailmax (look more roady) and Distanzia (look blockier). Had Tourances on an F650 a few years ago - they were OK but if they last that long doesn't that point to them generating less friction (grip)?
Any suggestions - other than two sets of wheels?

If your rear is heavily squared off you will get better handling and grip whatever tyre you change to. For highest wet and dry grip I found the BT020 best but are road only (as are the Conti Road Attack which I have never tried). If you are considering occasional green laning I find the Battlewings offer excellent grip wet and dry.

Bones, thanks for the response - I'm still getting to know the bike and find my way around this site.
My last bike was a Sprint ST, on which I had two sets of BT020s and I loved them to bits - absolutely outstanding in the wet. I am amazed that Bridgestone have no information about the BWs on their website - after a year of selling them! Are they trying to hide something? All I want to know is whether they are a blockier version of the BT020.
Also the BIKE test had the wrong pictures against the tyres - looked like a BT020 against the BattleWing text!
Am I getting paranoid or are Bridgestone really just that piss-poor at selling me tyres?:nenau
I've emailed them and if I get a response I may buy a pair of their tyres. Need to sort it in the next couple of weeks, especially if this dry spell breaks!

All I want to know is whether they are a blockier version of the BT020.

Apparently the BattleWings have the same carcass as the 020 so I suppose that wouldn't be a bad description. The BW's have much deeper tread so I am sure you will get more miles out of them. Don't know how the compound compares but suspect the 020 will win for outright grip on tarmac.

Hi, do the 607's wear well? I'm due to change my OE Tourances after 11,000miles and have been really happy with them. Apart from a little squaring off -which hasn't noticeably affected the ride/handling - they look like they could go another couple of thou'. However, would like to change now but don't want something that will only give marginal benefit re ride and them wear out in next to no time. What do think?

My 607`s lasted 5500 miles, that seems to be the going rate for them. I`ve got Pilot roads on at the mo & it looks like they`ll last about 6- 6.5k :nenau The front Pilot hasn`t worn as much as the front 607 did though

In a word yes. I get about 5.5 - 6k two up with full luggage with mine. (and that's on autobahn/autoroute and A roads with luuuvly bends !!

Mine came with D607's. I had to replace the rear after 3000 miles due to a puncture, but I estimate it would have lasted 6000 miles. The original D607 is still on the front and has done 12500 miles now. I suspect it will be good for about 14000 in total.

Protyre in Poole.... D607 fitted to the bike £201.34!!!!
Tourance £189.

I'll be looking elsewhere I think.

I usually use The Gear Box in Fleets Lane. 01202 683900 and have always found them competetive.

I've just emailed a BMW Motorrad dealer in Germany, with a view to possibly getting my tyres replaced next week should they be looking a tad shagged.

He replied that they stock Tourances,Anakees and Trailwings, but the Dunlop 607s are NOT an approved fitting for the GS Adventure !!!

It was the latter that came out best in the Bike tyre test !

The Germans have a very strict (but local) type approval for motorcycle tyres (and a range of other fittings). You can see it in the TT catalogue, wth a bunch of products being maked with TUV apporoved. If the manufacturer has not submitted the tyre for testing on that particular bike, it has no approval, and cannot be sold in Germany. Doesn't mean of course that the tyre doesn't work or is dangerous.

Whilst I can't remember which make (I'll say it was Michelin, only for example) I wasn't able to buy a matching tyre in Germany for my Blackbird. Yet I could easly buy one in UK, France or Belgium.
