Bike nicked - what next?

After much, much consideration and advice from you guys I made the leap in January and got myself a brand new 2010 r1200GS with all the extras and absolutely loved it.

But I found out on Wednesday morning that somebody else loved it as well as it disappeared courtesy of 'Midnight Motors' on Tuesday night...

It looks like the insurance company is going to pay me out in cash, so before I run off to Hertford BMW and order another one, I've got to ask if you were in my position would you buy another GS?

For example, that Ducati Multistrada looks one hell of a bike - anybody been on one?

If it was me i would bank some of the cash ,while looking for a- as new replacement.

Or if you don't need the cash,try every bike of similar style -multistrada

Then decide if you like any better than the GS.Really depends what you want the bike for i would say.If its just an all round road bike then your search could take you quite a long time.

I thought the multistrada was a scream and also surprisingly easy to get on with, but I was only on it for about an hour.

I'd expected it to be rough as a badger's ar5e at low speed, but it was a nice thing all round really. Switchgear felt a bit flimsy and lots of things to go wrong, but u could say that about any bike with lots of electrical tomfoolery. It was like a rocket ship in every engine mode, but I'm no speed demon usually, so maybe I'm easily impressed. There are a few around with low miles for just south of £10k - a fair saving on a new one. Felt quite light and nimble, not too tall (I may have had the low seat) and comfy while I was on it.

As others have said, however, it depends what you want and no-one else can tell you that - get test riding and buy an almax chain and lock for whatever you buy

Thanks for your comments. I think I'm going to test a Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré and the Multistrada MTs 1200 S. I would ride more, but I'm desperate to get back on two wheels...

That's my nice problem. The nasty one is security. The bike has to be parked on-road and when it was taken it was alarmed, with a very heavy chain on the front wheel and the steering lock on.

I'm think of getting a brake lever lock, a lamp post cable, smartwater and a tracker. But it seems if they want a bike they will take it - a friend who lives locally lost his bike a few weeks back and it was chained to an earth anchor in his front garden!

I think I'm going to move to a house with a garage - this is the second bike I've lost (as well as a car).

Sorry to hear that. Where in North London did it get stolen? I get no insurance if mine is not parked in the garage. I would buy one again.

Look at it this way: You're going to leave £15k out in the street.

£15k that is easily lifted into the back or a refridgerated (soundproof) van.

I think yer crazy to even contemplate leaving a brand new bike (esp a Multistrada) out on the streets (of North London).

As others have said, they know you have a bike, you can have all the brake lever locks in the world, and as many chains round yer front wheel, but a couple of scaffold poles, a van, and four blokes is all it takes.

I would only leave an old sh1tter out on the street (under a minging bike cover covered in grafitti and dog muck..) and get busy looking for a lock up somewhere ....

i was told that the 'scrotes' use skateboards to shift your pride and joy , so you can lock the wheels with a big a chain as you can find,and they'll still shift it!!

Sorry to hear mate, I can't imagine having my pride and joy nicked. I have an 05 GS and would not get the same kind of money back for it plus all the extras. I garage mine but appreciate not every one can do that. Good luck with the next one. They should cut their hands off like in Saudi, no mucking about!

Bike nicked-what next?

I can sympathise with you-had my lovely GS850 taken from the school carpark-where I work in NW London! I bought a 1150, from this parish, to replace it and haven't regretted it. I also bought a 2m length of Almax chain with a top of the range squire lock.The chain is mighty heavy.However, at night its locked in the garage.
For a piece of mind, perhaps renting a lock up or moving is an option as earlier mentioned.
