Thinking of a trip next year in Australia, anyone got knowledge or advice for bike shipping? thanks ...:)

http://www.getrouted.com.au/ - they mainly ship Oz bikes to the rest of the world & back. You might be lucky and get an empty berth in one of their containers, if you can be flexible with dates.

Dave Milligan the owner, is well know to many posters on UK.rec.motorcycles as they often meet up on the Isle of Man etc.

I went this year and rode a small bit, thought about shipping/flying my own bike but it's not the cost that's the biggest worry, it's clearing Aussie Customs. Your bike might arrive on time for your hols but then you might have to wait for Customs and or fumigation(more money!) which all eats into your tour time. I did Western Australia - WA - which the locals say stands for Wait Around as bureaucracy can be a bit slow. I ended up renting a GS in Perth instead.DSC01102.JPG

Here's the response to my recent (10 Nov 2010) enquiry about a one-way export of my 1150GS to Sydney. Note you may need a different combination of documents if you were only importing temporarily.

-------

Based on you delivering your BMW R1150GS into our depot near Heathrow (We can arrange collection from your address if you prefer), where we will pack into a motorcycle crate and ship by ocean up until arrival at port in Sydney, the price would be £745 (Transit time of approximately 6 weeks) or for £1345 by airfreight (Transit time of approximately 7 days).

These prices include freight, fuel surcharges, documentation, handling and export clearance. You will then need to pay any import and local charges on arrival in Sydney through an agent. If it helps you, we can certainly consign through our Australian agent who can look after the local formalities on your behalf.

We can also arrange insurance to cover loss or damage of your motorcycle motorcycle during transit. This is based on 1.5% of the bikes value + freight + 10%.

Copies of the following documentation are required when importing a motorcycle into Australia
* Proof of ownership/Registration document
* Bill of Sale
* Passport (photo page)
* Import Approval Certificate

The following websites should assist with the import approval certificates and general information.
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/index.aspx
http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/import/vehicles-machinery/motorcycles

I hope this helps with your planning and please do let me know if you would like any further details at this stage.
Kind Regards

shipping

recently returned to north wales after 6 years in oz.
returned with cars and bmw r1200gsa 2009.
cost of shipping bike approx 300 pounds. car about 1500.
got the bike cheap as was in a 4o ft shared container through an agent.
You will find that sending a motorbike via container relatively expensive being that they load them width ways in container tied to what i can only describe as a crusifix frame. GET ROUTED is one such company. Means only about 14 bikes to a 40 ft container.
Take into account you are paying for cu.mtr volume of bike +++ area above as they are unable to load above.
i Got around this by fabricating a crate from steel laminated with ply that would enable the removalists to stack goods against and on top of bike with confidence. GREATLY REDUCED RATE AS I ONLY PAID FOR FOR ACTUAL AREA USED UP 4 CU/MTR I THINK. 1.0 mtr x 1.8 x 2.3 weight 400kg including crate.
crate costed approx 120 pounds to build,dismantlable and stacks flat. wetsern australia is easiest to import into and cheapest to start your trip,no green slips (this is included in your rego. pits/mot's cheaper insurance,.
if you need any more info only glad to help. spent 4 years in kalgoorlie w.a.
Now a proud citizen, father of 1 aussie sheila 9 months.

hi just to let you know as well as your fees at this end there will be warfage fees and container unpacking fees in aus . also make sure any wood has been heat treated or you crate will be refused entry they are very keen on keeping out the long horn beetle. The timber must be stamped with the right treatment markings it has to be said the this is one of the hardest country's on the planet with strict regs.I believe aus now use the carne system for temporally imports witch should help you a lot.

Helmets and insurance - IMPORTANT

Being one who never reads the small print etc I need to point one thing out about visiting or moving to Aus. They have very strict rules about helmets being of Australian standard, this means they have stickers that show that your helmet is approved against their standards. I was warned about this whilst over there on a visit.

IF YOU USE A UK HELMET YOUR INSURANCE AMY BE INVALID IF THE WORST HAPPENS. This may means hospital bills, ambulance, insurance costs etc being unpaid by your insurer!

Please check that you have the correct helmet etc. I believe this does not apply to other clothing, boots gloves etc, just helmets. I have a £500 Arai and they would prefer me to use a £30 helmet with Aussie approval....go figure!

Ship,hire or buy ?

I'm off to Oz in Jan 2012 and after much research have opted to buy second-hand when I arrive. Did it 20 yrs ago:)
As mentioned earlier temp. exporting a GS would have cost me £3,000 return. Getting the bike from the port onto the road (red tape) can also be costly and stressful.

3 month's hire of a GS in Oz = <£3,500>. Plus assuming you're going to have an 'off' somewhere along the line, even a small spill in some 'bull dust' can lead to an excess fee somewhere in the small print.

The down side of buying second-hand:
BMs are an expensive taste in Oz. Average price for a 02 plate bike would be £5,000.

Stamp duty (3%) when changing vehicle ownership on purchase.

Time spent selling at the end of the trip. People can smell a bargin if you mention your departing the country and are desperate to sell.

If you sell in a different state to which you bought the bike, you'll need a new 'rego' (tax/mot/comp. 3rd party insurance etc) = £400

Thanks for the helmet info, might leave mine at home:( and go open face.
