Bike Thieves- Edinburgh Area

My sleep was rudely interrupted at 0230hrs this morning by two troublesome fellows breaking into one of the garages next to my house. They made off on a large sportsbike, which they'd ridden in on. I've no doubt that they'd cased the place earlier, as there are a few bikes based here.
As you may be aware, there's a couple of organised crews operating in town just now, who specialize in bike thefts. Cops chased these two around for a while and lost them on the Milton Road.
Looks like they had no trouble springing the neighbours garage door. You may wish to review your security.

My GS was stolen in May, they never got far though because of the imobilisor. I found it roond the corner with the ignition smashed out the frame.

Thats what I get for forgetting the disc lock

This scheme started a few years ago in the embra area RUTS and now we have organised motorcycle theft .
Any wee delinquent (good kids canny get on the course, just the scrotes) fancies learnin tae ride, hotwire, repair can join up tae help give them somethin tae focus their energies on.

maybe i'm just bein cynical, but the polis, as usual, are doin feck all aboot it, they're as bad as the scrotes that are thievin

I doubt very much that anyone who was on that scheme went on to be a "professional" bike thief because of their involvement with RUTS.

polis doing feck all about it ? in an age of disclosure, freedom of information and our old friend neglect of duty, doing feck all about reported crime is not really an option. I can always understand the frustrations of the victims though. Turns out that my neighbour who did have her garage screwed discovered that her husband's collection of tools had been scattered over the floor. That in itself doesn't seem too bad until you realise that the last person who laid hands on these was her dear husband, who died three years ago. I'm afraid that this will bring on yet another relapse for her.

Problem is that the polis are so bound up in paperwork that the ones who probably could detect shite on their shoes don't have time for much enquiry work.

You're not going to tell me that door to door enquiry consisting of knocking on a door each side of locus still doesn't go on are you?

Not my intention to defend all and sundry, but you'd at least be looking for something. Door to door's been done in this instance, wee lift for the ID branch, wee chase and a couple of statements taken. Not much, but hey, it's not 'nothing' either.

i had a car stolen from central edinburgh a few years ago, phoned me a month later to say it had been found abandoned,( musty been ootside the station). as always the "overpaid an underworked" had done feck all. Been let down toooo many times by L+B, shower of lazy coonts, except you obviously.

I think all they taught the ones I had dealings with were to say "Sorry there is nothing I can do" when they really meant "Sorry but I can't be arsed doing anything".

I had more success solving two crimes using underworld connections, and the justice was quicker and more suitable

I agree with Sky and Cunning on this, i have had a couple of bike stolen - the 1st one i went through the Polis, waste of tax payers money IMO, they'd need to improve to be useless...anyway, i get a call 8 months or so after the theft, and i kid you not "hi taysides finest here, just wondering if you've found your bike, we're updating our records"

The 2nd one i sorted out myself and got the bike back, when you start to ask questions and get names it does'nt take you long to figure out who's doing the stealing, where they ride the bikes and where they store the bikes. It makes me wonder what the polis actually do

When I found my GS roond the corner I reported the theft immediately, not with any thought to the f***ers being caught but give a a record of the event for my insurance.
Two hours after the call was made two officers came round, took a statement, went out to take a look where the bike was and where it should have been. They admitted that there was little chance of solving the crime and even if the culprits were apprehended there was no chance of compensation as they tend to be on benefits and even their fines are paid off at about 2 quid a month.
Most bikes are recovered when, by chance they catch the bastards in the act, the thieves admit to a string of other offences.
The report reference Number came in handy for the insurance.
