Thanks for all your responses gents, trialled the radio mounted on a bracket sitting vertically in front of the top box, 1 new microphone and a retaining bracket for the input/output connection and all is now well.
Took a little faffing about but the results are excellent, managed to transmit/receive over what must have been a mile tonight and thats without line of sight.
