Bike won’t start

When it does, you’ll know for certain. It will just cough twice and die. The more you try to hot restart the engine, the quicker you kill it. Sudden onset not a gradual failure. Funny thing is it may restart once cooled and be fine again for a day or two, then the same symptoms next time you do a short trip and immediately try another hot engine start.

Duly noted, I will certainly be on the lookout and the first sign all is not well I'll look at swapping the battery. I'm assuming doing so can't void warranty?

If I had to claim under warranty, I’d put the shagged OE battery back in it and make it the dealers problem to jump start the bastard !

They shouldn’t have sold me an “approved used” bike with a fucked battery in it in the first place.

Seems my battery has given up. It was struggling to turn the bike over when I was in Croatia a few weeks ago, it has now let me down and had to call the RAC out last weekend to get me home. The bike is 2 year old gs1250. Surely the battery should last longer than that. Dick's said it will not be covered under warranty so offered me a replacement for 170 quid. I can't see the point in putting the same 1 back in if they only last 2 years. I am looking for a replacement.

For £170 !!

Buy a Motobatt Hybrid for £155, a far better battery than the shit OE item.

Alternatively, get yourself a lithium booster pack like a Noco GB40 or similar.

Links near the start of this thread.

EDIT: the link says out of stock so maybe try Motorworks.

Do you know if these can be maintained with an Optimate?

Hybrid batteries do not need a lithium specific charger, the built in battery management system takes care of that, you can just use a regular optimate type charger suitable for AGM cells.

Yes they can (I have the same as Adam)

Mine is maintained using a CTEK 5.0

No issues so far and you can fell the difference in starting. Just quicker and zero struggle like I had before.

I will say though I only charge it once a week if not using. I do not leave it on maintain.

Gone for a NOCO nlp14....lithium battery LiFePO4. RAC supply and discount makes it £106. Just look at the specs then reviews inc. youtube and make the call

Yeah looked at a fully lithium battery but you may need a different charger and they hate the cold.

Hence why I opted for the dual battery

Looks like my battery is starting to give problems.
Had a 2020 GS1250 kept for 3 years when in garage always on BMW charger. Think the bike had an alarm not sure, but I use heated jacket and gloves. No problem with battery or starting after 3 years of ownership
Oct 2023 bought BMW GS Rallye again always kept on BMW charger when in garage.
Went to go out and plugged in heated gear before starting, normally do heated gear after starting, and would not start. Disconnected heated gear and tried again and by luck bike started.
Rode 30 miles with heated gear on to dealer to pick up some bits. Came out and bike would not start TFT showing 12.2 V jump started and very quickly TFT showing 14.3V. Rode home and in garage still showing 14.3V , did not put heated gear on coming home.
Bike put on charger, went to garage later in day to test bike and bike started fine. Next day checked voltage 14.3V on TFT but would not start volts now showing 12.5V, gave the battery a few minutes to recover and 14.3V on TFT showing tried again to start and started but a little sluggish.
I will buy a new battery if needed, but could there be another fault with the bike.
Cheers

I use these on loads of bikes.

Never had an issue.

Great thing is I don’t have to remember what battery it is when I move bikes around.

Plug in and forget.

Ok I’m now suffering this issue on my 2024 1250GSA. I see a Motobatt hybrid battery is recommended is there any update on the best one to use?

I have a noco lithium battery in the shed, I may check it's charged, and take it with me as a spare, it's not as if it weighs much lol
