Following my starting problems, I've noticed that the choke cable fitting to the Bing carb has been modified using a smaller thread adjuster and mounting it with a nut each side. Because the adjuster is smaller, the choke cable is now threaded into the adjuster rather than sitting in the top, so the cable cannot be set up with any free play. It's now adjusted very carefully so the choke is completely off (at which point the idle dropped, so it must have been slightly on before). Is there any off the shelf solution to a buggered thread where the choke cable adjuster sits?

The lower nut is a standard part. Not sure if there is even a thread on the carb for the choke cable adjuster (unlike the throttle)

The cable has To be fixed Within the "adjuster" otherwise it wont positively shut the choke, which isn't, like the throttle, spring closed (I think)

You can adjust it by loosening the clamp screw on the choke lever on the carb, pushing the lever as far down is it will go, then retightening it.

(again, I think...)

That's interesting. There seems to be a thread in the carb, looks a bit chewed up. The adjuster is small so the cable is wedged into the top, i.e. no possibility of free play, which is why I thought there should be a bigger adjuster to allow the cable outer to move.

There's two types of choke cable arrangement.

The old, as per the link above, choke lever fixed to the airbox, or the new, with the lever on the handlebar.

The old version isn't really a cable, but a stiff piece of wire with the adjuster screwed onto the outer cable.
Two nuts are needed to fix them to the carb, one goes on top, the other below the fixing

Adjustments can be made by loosening the nuts, move the adjuster up and down and tighten the nuts.
Another adjustment can be made where the wire hooks on the chokelever on the carb itself.

No threads on the carb on this version.

The newer handlebar type is just like the throttlecable, threaded in the carb and locked by a single nut.
If the thread in the carb is buggered, you can save the day by taking a worn cable, cut a slot in the nut, just big enough for the cable to pass trough and fit that nut on the underside of the carb fixing, on the adjuster.

Now you can adjust the cable as per tho old version, loosen both nuts etc, etc.

Paul.

Old choke on the airbox, but there is a thread in the carb top, although it looks chewed up. Yes, it's a stiff bit of wire, which makes it hard to have any float in the system as the outer is tight in the adjuster, so there's no play. I can adjust it, no problem, but because there's no slack in the system, it's not easy to get it right.

Yep, it is a bit fiddly to get it right.

You want to adjust it so that with the lever on the airbox fully up, the lever on the carb just touches the lower stop on the carb.

By either moving the adjuster up or down, with the 2 nuts, or loosen the cableclamp on the carb's lever and adjust there.

I got it bang on, just thought there was meant to be some play in the outer. It's very fiddly and was definitely slightly 'on' before when the lever was off.
