Hello Airheads!,got some 40mm Bings I am going to fit to my 1150gs but am led to believe that they have float issues.Could I ask if any of you have fitted the outrageously expensive Modified Float Kits as sold by motorworks,if so is there any MPG improvement over a good original set up.I am not buying the explaination in the motorworks blurb, but it would be nice to be proven wrong.Thank you very much!

Hello Rob,sorry not sure,Ive got a 94/40/111 and a 94/40/112.I have an ad in the wanted section for the Bing Carb Manual as sold by motorworks and was hoping I might be able to ID them that way as well as getting some help with jetting.I know a lot of people slag these carbs off but its simplicity I am after and they are nice tactile things.I am thinking that after this long in service it must be possible to obtain relative reliabity? Cheers

They're really good carbs. Most of the grief is down to people not taking care of them. They do suffer with grit getting under the float needle causing them to dump fuel over your foot. It's worth draining the tank occasionally to flush the grit and crap out.

I wouldn't bother with the modified floats unless you have a problem with yours sinking. I've heard about this but have never actually met anybody who's had a problem with it happening.

Yours are 1981 to 84 R100 Carbs.

They came with 160 main jets, 2.66 needle jets and a 46-341 needle with the clip on the 3rd position. Idle jet is 45. That's saved you buying a manual :D

Thank you very much for that!,my plan was to buy a wide band AFM and use it in conjunction with some dyno time to sort out the jetting.I ve been doing a little research over on ADV R and found your AFM/airhead thread which was both interesting and informative so thank you again!:beerjug:Cheers!

The AF Meters are great but it gets pretty hairy trying to tune for performance on the road. There's no substitute for a rolling road when your sorting the top end jetting out.

Stock jetting won't be far off the mark

Cheers Rob,going to get one with some sort of recording facility so I dont end up killing someone!.Garry that looks lovely. My bike was originally an 1100 but now runs the higher compression RS/RT 1150 top ends, the idea is to use the 1100GS inlet stubs.Got a low pressure pump from an XJ600 to be going on with until I can sort out a straight gravity feed, your set up looks very good,is that DIY or Steve Scriminger?

Still looking for "The Bing Carb Manual" as sold by Motorworks, unfortunately they are out of stock, anyone care to sell me one?,thank you

I wouldn't put too much faith in the Bing manual. Here's a reference to it I came across:-

"I was very disappointed with the Bing manual. I had heard fro ages that it was THE BOOK that would impart amazing understanding of the mysterious Bing Vergasser.

Total Hooey. The manual seems, to my eye, to do two things: 1) provide diagrams of all the parts (useful) and 2) try to sell me more stuff (NOT useful). This second item does not surprise me, considering that when I ordered the manual, Bing also sold me a totally un-necessary set of jets (in my inexperience of the time I bought them).

I found that rebuilding my carbs was the most valuable thing ever for learning how they work."

Once again thanks very much:beerjug:,nice little ride to Leicester on the cards
