I am looking to brighten up the engine casing on an R80, I dont really want to remove the motor, any ideas please

Could try a Truck and trailer motor factors and get some of the stuff they sell for cleaning alloy wheels on trucks. Spray on/wash off. Fairly serious stuff (it is an acid) but having said that, the lads that work in the truckwash bays don't take any special precautions with it, just leave it a few mins and blast it off.
Might do the job, start with a weak solution...... and gloves!

Shiny Sinks or Cif for stainless surfaces.

Cif Bathroom Lime or Lemon Mousse, brushes and a good scrub, will bring it back like new

soda ash blast with the engine in place maybe?
