I've not posted before so hello everybody! I could do with a bit of advice. I am going on a short camping break soon but need to keep my BlackBerry charged up. Rather than take the standard kit and leave it charging in pubs/wardens office etc are there any possibilities of using the bike when parked up (1200GS)

any advice greatfully recieved

ok ... well first and foremost welcome to the forum :)

Secondly, I'm going to move your post over to the technical section, hopefully you'll get a better response there to your query.

I'm sure I'll be corrected but doesn't the 1200 shut down all leccy after the ignition has been off for a very short while?

If it does then, no you'll be stuck with finding somewhere to power it, although it will have to be a pretty shagged battery to not last between charges while you're riding :nenau

Hi and welcome to the group :thumb

I would say that the simplest and most straightforward solution is to get a USB car charger and to use the synch cable to charge the Blackberry as you ride. This solution won't be as fast as using a dedicated charger, but it's cheap and allows you to charge the Blackberry while you're in the car as well. This sort of adapter is easily available from places like Maplin and PCWorld.

You will also need an adapter cable that plugs into the accessory socket which then ends in a connector like a car cigar lighter. For that, try your local BMW dealer, or you can buy them from companies like Bikebits, Nippy-Normans etc.

There might be a slight problem with keeping the accessory socket live - it's a 1200 issue that others on here will know more about, and will be able to explain better about it. All you're likely to need is a trip to the dealer to update the bike's software. Don't worry about Judge, he's a technoluddite :augie

you can charge it whilst you are riding .. it's relatively simple. I have seen a particular gentleman from Wapping use this setup which I subsquently purchased as well :D

You will need to buy this ... it should have the correct tip for a blackberry already included.

Then you need to get one of those BMW plug to cigarette lighter plug converters. I think most BMW accessories shop stock them.

The beauty of this charger is that it can charge other things too .. like compact cameras or ipods.

12v Blackberry charger, with silicone case and screen protector, £6.99 on ebay....you'll also need a BMW Din to car type adaptor, £3.99 from EBay or 8 quid or so from your local dealer :)

Turn off the screen brightness thing and the bluetooth and you sould get 4 days out of it....so unless you're not riding for 4 days, it'll be fine charging just hen you're riding...the blackberry is one of the fastest charging phones I've had :)

If it is on a "recent" software update (my 05/2006 GSA is fine) then if it is drawing power before the ignition is switched off then the socket will stay live for approx 15 mins.

Aargh - just reread Judge's post and I've now realised that he was talking about when the ignition has been OFF for a while. I thought he was referring to some other problems while the ignition's on. :blast :blast :blast

Oh well, live and learn and all that.
