I wonder if anyone can help or cast any light on my instrument problems

I left the bike (2013 990 Adventure) in my garage for two weeks whilst away and on my return the clocks were dead aside from ABS light and backlight. The bike starts and runs just fine.

I removed the clocks and dismantled them to inspect - no signs of any moisture ingress so re-assembled them and re fitted and they worked! put the bike away, went down to the garage again today and they are not working again!!

There must be a reason (I have seen some similar threads that report the same problem) - it'd be good to know - I'm pretty sure it isn't water in the clocks mine were bone dry inside and have never misted. The 990 has done less than 10k and hasn't had a hard life (yet)

Unplug them for 10 mins and plug them back in. If they work something is crashing for some reason. If it doesn't help then maybe a broken wire or track that you disturbed taking them apart. Might not be a bad idea to disconnect the battery and reboot the whole bike. 990 is nothing like as complicated as the 1xxx bikes but they are still computers in there.

Thanks that makes sense as it worked after being off the bike for an hour whilst I dismantled and re fitted. So if I disconnect the battery for an hour is that as good as unplugging them (not wanting to take the bloody crash bars and bodywork off again). Is there a way to re-boot the bike?

Thanks Marki that's great - what I don't understand is why it was faultless before I went away but has developed this issue in the garage on it's own for two weeks??

Could be as simple as the voltage went down a bit and the computer didn't like it too much. It might not be that but trying simple free things first is always good. I work in IT and a reboot works 95% of the time much to people's annoyance.

Well I did the suggested battery disconnect and the clocks worked again, then 10 mins later went to the bike but this time no joy again. Just the ABS light, backlight and no sweep or other signs of life.

I called Redline KTM and all they could suggest was knackered clocks (£400 for a new set!!) but I can't think this is the case as they work after power has been deprived for 10 mins. Any more thoughts??

Very frustrating!

I think your clocks are goosed then. Possibly a component breaking down after time with heat. Disconnecting let's everything cool so it works till whatever component cries enough again.

Don't know very much about the 990 but can you see anything to do with the clocks if you plug into the diagnostic port? I know you can read the engine ecu but don't know if you can see anything else.

Thanks Marki - I'm taking the bike to Craigs in Dewsbury on Thursday (as they are close to me) so that they can plug it in to diagnostics. I suspect I may have to end up shelling out for new clocks if that tells me nothing!

Just spoken to Paul at Newcastle M&S - what a star - he reckons the clocks are shot and he's going to email KTM and try to get me a new set with goodwill.

I am going to try one more approach, I have disconnected the battery to 're-boot' the clocks/bike and will idle for 15 mins. If the clocks stay on during this running time I reckon the clocks are OK as it probably won't be a heat induced failure. I suspect they will remain on but then won't work after I turn the bike off and then back on again.

I will report back.

Ok so re-set the clocks by doing a battery disconnect then started to do an ecu re-set by running for 15 mins on idle. The clocks worked until 8 minutes into that period then only the neutral light and ABS light along with the back light remained lit and functioning.

I now suspect it is the clocks that are shot.

Don't know if any of the companies that advertise being able to fix car ones would be able sort them out. Maybe worth looking around.

Have you checked the red and white wires that go into a plug just above the solinoid they rot out on some bikes

I was leant another set of clocks by Craigs in Dewsbury today (they were very helpful and let me take the clocks home to try) The other clocks worked fine. (Interestingly on the 20 mile journey to Dewsbury my clocks came on went off, faded, flashed - there were having a right old time with the occasional period of stable operation.)
