Took Bertha on a 300 mile tour around the back roads of North Wales today. She runs really well, but I've noticed a little drip of oil coming from the boot that joins the bevel box to the swing arm.

I'm guessing that something is going on inside, so what is the prognosis?

The gearbox vent might be blocked allowing air / oil pressure to get into the swinging arm. Or the output vent from the gearbox to drive shaft isn't closed up.

It also means there's a hole or split in the gaitor

I had a hole in the gaitor too, trouble is one of the seals had gone too which is why there was oil where there shouldn't have been.

Sorry not technical, I took it to the Guru and watch him play drop the shaft in the swingarm, apparently it can go on as long as a 5th set at Wimbledon but my experience was over quicker than England could exit from a world cup

Or was that another problem I had with it, after a while they all blur in to one - all I know is St.Eptoe didn't give me a bill for the work he gave me a rent book for tenancy!

Pops has phoned and enlightened me.

Apparently it is down to the gearbox vent and a something or other thingymajig with a duberyfurkle. Modern bikes don't have these things and I am still wet behind the ears

I need to clear the vent bolt and then all will be well until the next time

Ive already spoken to flip. When I did the gearbox some four years ago. no one told me about filling in the hole in the seal so it will leak a bit there. I had noticed over the years that there was a small amount that came out over time but it got worse if the vent bolt into the speedo connection was blocked. I only used the bike for leisure and I made regular checks of the gearbox oil level which hardly ever changed and I also drained the swingarm every now and again. never got as much as a teaspoon full out of it. Now I know somw on here will say it is.nt right but I reconed it could be done sometime in the future. Ive suggested to Flip that he books it in for the next wee-kend.

Of course some would say that if it was a mono ,this sort of problem would not arise......

Blocked the vent hole on my para by moving the front gaiter back and squiding in some RTV which reduced the amount of oil that was being held by the lower gaiter.

Just think how well that little bit of oil is lubing the driveshaft splines on its way down to your leaking gaiter.
And just because the oil is dripping out doesnt mean you've got a hole in the gaiter, especially if its only held in place with a cable tie instead of the OE metal band clamp thing.

300 miles isn't problem so long as the airhead is on a trailer.

Sussed and sorted

The rubber boot had a very small nick in the bottom which allowed the oil to seep out (I know there shouldn't be any oil, but I know why I am getting a small amount and it's all my dads fault).

So, I popped the boot of and turned it 180 degrees so that the small split is at the top, job done Took the old girl out last night and there is no leak. Just need to pop the boot off every now and then to remove any leakage before it fills up too much.

I feel like a real airhead owner now thanks to the furrowed brow and engrained oil under my fingernails
