bloody RTs

Hmm Did You check the tyre pressures and set the suspension accodingly and adjust the saddle etc etc

That may have made a much nicer ride all round
I had a 2011 1200RT as a loan bike today and it is probably the worst bike I have ever ridden.

First off, the riding position. Is the seat height-adjustable? My knees were up under my armpits and I felt like I should be wearing a clowns outfit and riding it round a circus ring.

The mirrors!!! What an absolute f.cking joke. How the hell they sell bikes with mirrors this poor I'll never know. As much use as tits on a fish.

The handling!!! It doesn't want to lean over at all, you have to force it over and then it feels like it's really scared and about to crap itself. It tries to sit back up and the front wheel starts to tuck under. it's horrible.

Stability. There isn't any. Falls off white lines and overbanding like you wouldn't believe. Very susceptible to side-winds and feels like the wheels are going to wash out from under you. (My 1200 Adventure on the return journey in the same conditions just got buffeted around but still felt secure.)

This was a 2500 mile bike with good tyres, ESA set on solo/normal and no obvious defects or damage.

The switchgear. Yuk. Looks cheap and nasty and is very small and fiddly and that was with summer gloves on. Getting back on my GS was wonderful, big, chunky and nicely-spaced switches.

The instrument display. Too dark. Can't see feck all. (until you go under the trees, then it all lights up and looks lovely :thumb)

The verdict. I wouldn't have one given, which came as a surprise because I think they look quite nice. :nenau And it was a pretty colour.

I was very glad to see the back of it :barf

I test rode one and also noticed the legs cramped, poor mirrors and clocks you can't see in daylight. But, to be fair, to go from a GS to any non big traillee you'll notice these three faults.

After test riding the RT I also tested a ST1300 and this seemed a better bike to me. Okay, you lose the ESA, heated saddle and cruise control but the engine is more powerful, more dynamic, more economical and a million times smoother....you just have to put up with the sewing machine Honda whine.

The ST1300 is only 6bhp more powerful than the 1200RT and this would be negated by the extra 60kg of weight it carries around when compared to the weight of the RT. It is certainly not more economical than the RT when comparing the results posted by owners on Fuelly. The engine may be smoother but not by a significant amount.

Are the mirrors that bad? No, I don't think they are and I have not noticed any glare on the instruments on mine either. My legs are more cramped than on my GS, but the GS has the Fastway footrests set at the lowest setting and a custom seat that is a touch taller than standard. I could get extra room by fitting a lowering kit if I wanted.

I have to admit, the economy calculation was on the basis of doing 16k on my GSA and averaging about 44mpg on fuelly....I hadn't looked to see what RTs got and the pan is getting over 50mpg.

Re power, the pan certainly feels faster. I'd be interested to see a comparison of the power delivery.

My 2008 1200RT is currently returning 57.4mpg. A friend has a 1300 Pan and achieves nowhere near that.

Went for relaxed tour around N.Spain earlier in the year and averaged 60.4 mpg on my 06 1200RT and Louise averaged 73.66 on her 08 F650GS twin. Mind you we were on back roads or riding below 75mph most of the time.

On a similar trip with her and me on my 1150GSA I get about 48/50 mpg. When I'm not with Louise my mpg isn't usually so good :)

Simon,

If you are only getting 44mpg from your GSA then you are not going to get much more from a ST1300.

exactly the same 120 mile daily commute doing exactly the same speeds (80 on the m'way and whatever I can across London) and I'm getting 50mpg on the pan. Pipe and slippers image aside, there are only two things I miss about the GS - the turning circle (valuable when slow speed filtering) and the fact I only had to fill up every 2.5 days instead of now every 2.

I can see why you were only getting 44mpg from your GSA now. Once you start crusing at 80mph + it really knocks the fuel consumption for six because of the aerodynamics. On the RT the aerodynamics are better so you don't get the same effect on the fuel consumption.

Jeez ...I would'nt want to be following you in heavy traffic!

why? Filtering across London isn't 'straight up the middle', it's weaving round and between stationary cars, buses and anything else that get's in your way. The pan has a crap turning circle which limits.
