anybody got any idea how to stop all this bloody spam I'm getting on outlook express. viiaaagra-viiiaaagra fifty times a bloody day. Sick to the back teeth with it!!!!:spitfire:spitfire:spitfire:spitfire

Depends on you ISP provider?

If you are through BT Broadband, the mail goes through their server first and put all suspicious stuff first into a junk folder, you then sift through that leaving your Outlook to receive proper e-mails.

If you have Outlook rather than Outlook express, you can add a 'rule' to the spam files and that will block them.

this might help for Express: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/email/oe_filter.html - so if you ebter specific words like viagra, and all of the common words they use in the headings, you might be able to filter out some, but not all.

BUT - if you have neither, the fastest way of doing it is to mothball your current e-mail addy, and create a new one.

Best to create a extra e-mail addresses too at the same time, and use these for anything other than personal e-mails (web stuff, forums and so on).

I think spam e-mails use sophisticated programs to spurt out millions of randomly created e-mail per second, so if your name is 'andy smith' (for example) the chances are you will use [email protected] - so poor andy smith will get zillions per day.

Check with your isp provider first and see if they can help.

Ditch OE and get a free Gmail account. No spam and you can access it from anywhere you are with internet access :thumb2

I've got plenty of Gmail invites if you need one :)

Sounds a good idea... I'll get the house move sorted first and then re-evaluate :thumb

Could start by bunging these guys to reveal the names and addresses of the culprits (seems that most of the worlds spam originates froma surprisingly small number of individuals:spitfire). Then organise a whip round for a decent hitman:mcgun - I'm in for £50.:D

cheers Mikepg, forgive my thickness but how do I mothball my account addy and create a new one

Another vote for Gmail (although you won't get a g-mail account now, it'll be the same thing but it'll be called google mail :( )

TIP though.......set up Outlook or Outlook express etc to cover your gmail account and every so often (depending on the importance of your emails) use one of them to download all of your mails from their server- I haven't yet had anything lost from them, but having all of my emails saved on someone else's server makes me slightly nervous so I back them up and save them like that :)

I think I've had three bits of spam make it through this year......thousands don't but I still nip into the spam file occasionally and glance down to make sure nothing has been stuck in there that shouldn't have been (nothing has yet )

Cheers guys, forgive my thickness but how do I get a free G mail account.

Now please don`t take this the wrong way but........ :D .............you can google it :blast :D

I set one up for a mate a couple of weeks ago and it takes 5 minutes to do :thumb2

i still get spam from google mail. reduced considerably, but still plenty.

i get my gmail forwarded tomy ISP's POP3 mail server, which has a further layer of spam filters, i pick up as normal, then i run some home made rules in Mail prog.

honestly, Mailwasher is the way to go, but it don't work for Macs :tears

I very rarely get any spam into my inbox (1 or 2 per month if that) but plenty caught & put into the spam folder. I like it

It depends on who you are using for ISP supply - the are the first port of call.

Gmail is is very good though and might be worth doing.

Mailwasher is the way to go

Hi all
Mailwasher is a program that looks at the mail held on the ISP's server without downloading it. It will show you Subject, From, To and a whole lot more options, and will even allow you to preview the mail. It has and inbuilt spam filter and you can also nominate friends or blacklist by ISP or user name.
It then allows you to delete all the mail nominated, spam or blacklisted, at the ISP server. It will then open Outlook express, or whatever, and you download only the mail you want.

If you do not want to change your email address then you can set up a redirect via Googlemail (was gmail) and still use Outlook Express.

Firstly, goto www.gmail.com and set up a gmail acount. Follow the instructions to set up the gmail account using outlook express via POP3.

Most likely, your ISP will have a webmail interface. Go to this page and log on. Look for a preferences/options tab. You should find an option to redirect your mail to another address. Set it up to redirect your inbox to the new googlemail account.

Go to the "accounts" section of outlook express. Disable the account associated with your ISP. In your new googlemail account, set the "reply to address" to your current email address. Use this new googlemail account for all email.

Hey presto, you should be ready to use the new filtered email system.

This is how it should work:
You send mail: looks just like before, the recipient sees your "current address" as the reply to address.
Incoming mail: sent to your current address but is bounced to googlemail by your ISP. Google loves spam, eats it up and only spits out proper emails which you download from google at your convenience using Outlook Express.
