Blow by blow how to clean a 1200?

She got away with a broken wrist.............she was very lucky, she came round a corner, sun in her eyes, didn't see him turning right.........and she had no where to go.......so she on the look out for another cbr 400 as she only just 5ft, ..........so if anybody hears of one lets know...............................:thumb2
 
Cleaning?

What does that mean? when it gets so dirty it and it becomes camoflaged i.e. blends into the background sell it, buy a nice new clean one. G.S's are supposed to look as though they've just done the dakkar. So now go and wash your mouth out and NEVER mention cleaning your bike again.

I've always wondered why people say to let the bike cool off before washing? Anyone care to enlighten me?

Cold water getting into paint chips and expanding due to heat, causing blistering. Warmed water activating salt, causing corrosion. Excessively rapid cooling of the engine causing stress and cracking....... etc. etc. etc. virtually ad infinitum :thumb
 
That's what I'd have thought too but then I see so many pictures of people riding through rivers and fords etc and I can't help but wonder what the difference is??? They're designed to have be ridden through water and I can't imagine there's too much of a difference between that and a cold hose in the back yard?

I'm not saying I agree, only putting forward a few of the common arguments :thumb2
 
Fair enough Wizard - I have seen an impressive pic of you fording not too long ago! I just can't imagine there's ANY difference between the 'stresses' placed on the engine due to 'excessively rapid cooling' when it's submerged in cold water or being hosed off after a ride! So.... if anyone thinks there is I'd love to hear it - I'm not saying I wash my bike when hot but I'd like to know why I shouldn't and the arguments I've heard don't convince me :)

Riding through water is one thing, the 'steam' will be blown away by the airflow, maybe even dried off, but when you wash the bike when the engine is hot the steam rises and will get into the electrical connections that water quite simply doesn't reach. The bike sits there and the connections in out of the way places get the steam.

OK I know it sounds daft but it's true. We'd wash the police bikes when they were warm, when we came in at the end of a shift... after 12 months the wiring harness under the tank was a mess, all the connections green and 'orrible :eek:

Never wash my own bikes when hot, and when new I always pull every electrical connection apart I can find and vaseline up :eek:

Never have a problem after that :thumb

2nd, you need a powerful magnifying glass to show up dirty bits
Then you log the dirty bits position on your book of bike outline diagrams.
Prepare your washing solution and a selection of impliments, brushes, sponges on sticks, toothbrushes and cotton wool buds.
Carefully wash the bike from bottom to top. If you wash it from top to bottom you might leave streaks.
Remember to refer to your dirtiness diagram because when the bike is wet, you will not see the dirt.
Rinse off and dry with chamois. Get into all the nooks crannies and screw slots with the cotton buds
Remember to clean between your tyre treads. This is an area forgotton by most.
Dry with a hair dryer set on the gentle setting.
Polish with lambswool buffers.
Collect shotgun from locked cupboard under the stairs. Point at face and operate trigger with big toe.

Thanks to BMW Brain storming they now have decided not to include a spark plug spanner in there bike kit so you can pump the water out of your cylinders , so instead you have a lovely submarine now:nenau :banghead: :mooney :blast
 
Its funny how different we all are...:nenau

As a newby rider I have read all over the place that salt eats bikes faster than Jane Goody can upset the nation.

Yet, tons of folk here don't seem to bother with cleaning their bikes.

So do the non cleaners not ride in the winter or do their bikes get eaten and they don't care or is all this salt stuff just bollocks?

On my 2004 1200 I have corrosion on the attachment point from the exhaust to the frame and of all places on the engine number/serial number mounted under the handlbars. I guess on both cases caused by two different metals touching.

What do the great unwashed say to that?:confused:
