Blue exhaust

I'm sure there's a really simple way of sorting this, but my R1200GS has the chrome exhaust, and it has gone blue/ purple where it comes out of the engine (there's probably a technical term for this). Anyone know what the best product is to get it back to a chrome finish?

Just Googled Bluejob (my computer is used to dodgy Google searches ). It looks OK, but some people are saying it doesnt work. One website reckons scrunching up some aluminium foil and dipping it in white vinegar! I would have thought that would scratch the hell out of it? Others reckon Barkeepers Friend will do the trick. Any other suggestions?

Be careful. The blurb on HG site says that it is not suitable for Chromium

Don't use anything abrasive e.g. scrunched-up foil. Leave that for cleaning your BBQ.

Even if you can polish it back to normal I doubt it will last long. The blueing is caused by heat isn't it? It happens to the titanium parts on my Akro too, always has and have never been bothered by it.

I think its supposed to be aluminium foil and coke. It was actually one of the few things they proved on myth busters lol. I would just leave it because it will turn blue again in a few short miles anyway.

It used to be that, (my dad told me coz Im to young) you could wrap bare copper cable around the top of the pipe to act as a heatsink.

If you really must, RT, Brilliant Polishes could be the stuff for you. It's specifically designed for chrome or polished engine parts. Unlikely it'll prevent the exhausts discolouring again but it's supposed to work well!

I believe those metal polishes are used by a number of car museums. I've got a couple of their metal polishes and they work really well. If I find a small enough container, I don't mind posting you a wee sample from my bottle to see how you like it (I'm not affiliated with Brilliant, just have a bottle of the stuff that's unused!).

Cheers Neo! I'm reluctant to buy anything as loads of products promise to do the job, but don't! I'm aware that they will probably blue again in the future, but wouldn't mind having something in the garage that I can use on the days where I want to spend hours getting the bike looking 100% again

The headers on Moto Guzzi's are made from the lowest grade S/Steel imaginable.... polish them and leave the bike in the garage for a fortnight ..low & behold they've tarnished.
I was put onto Purple polish by an American MG forum and boy does it work.

I also used brilliant polish for hot surfaces, but IMHO not as good as Purple polish

Solvol autosol worked on my Commando when I was a lad, however as Tossers have previously posted, they just blue up again
