I thought BSODs were a thing of the past with these new-fangled windows versions, but apparently not.

When I try and start windows I get a BSOD, the point of which is:

nv1ddmkm.sys

This is a display driver for the Nvidia 7300 GT which is known to be faulty in Windows 7

But HTF can I install the good one that I have downloaded when I can't start windows?

Try restarting the PC and make sure you start it in safe mode. This will load a known set of safe drivers. You can then find an updated driver for your graphics, install it. Restart your machine and WALA.
