After reinstalling my Symantec Utilities program I get the following error on the dreaded blue screen and although I can load Windows it becomes unstable. (Its an old but trusted desktop PC with Windows 98.)

"Invalid VxD dynamic link call from VDHCP(03) + 00002714 to device "0489", service 7.
Windows configuration invalid, run Windows setup programme to correct this problem
.

My questions to anyone that can help are:
How do I recover the situation without reinstalling Windows if its possible.
As its Windows 98, is it really worth the trouble or should I just dump the lot !!!

Update

Uninstalled Symantec Utilities again rebooted . Success !!! Loads Windows no problem but won't connect to the internet (2 other laptops in the house have no problem so its not the wireless router)

When I've run winipcfg I get "Fatal Error - TCP / IP is not running on this system" so it must be a software problem I guess. Have any of you IT Gods out there got a course of remedial action please ??

Doughboy have you reinstalled the drivers for the router because it may well be wirlessly connecting to the laptops but as you have rebooted the PC the drivers will need to be installed on the PC again? and as far as Symantec(Norton) don't touch it mate.

Bin EVERYTHING Symantec and install AVG free or Avast free. Run SFC in the Start>run box. This will look for missing or corrupt windows files and prompt you to repair/replace them, you'll prob need the W98se cd to do this.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I eventually determined that the TCP/IP protocol had been corrupted which resulted in me having to uninstall and reinstall. So I'm now back on line with the trusty ol' desktop again. Thanks for taking the time to answer though ! :thumb :thumb
