As to what level of technical knowledge you need to ride a bike safely, again I don't think we should be too prescriptive. On this forum we have those who take the FD apart for fun and take great pictures, like our friend in Galway, and others who take their bike to the dealer for everything, who can say which is the safest approach. At least Eoghan was doing the work himself and now knows his bike better for it.

As he clearly made a "Horses Arse" of putting it on, see his video as mentioned by yourself for evidence of this, perhaps at least some technical knowledge would make it safer, for example how is he likely to spot any other "technical" fault with his bike which could lead to a failure whilst riding. In this case the damn exhaust falling off and hitting some poor bugger behind!
