Hi, I just have my 2008 F650gs twin a few months now and loving it so far, there is only 3500 miles on the clock, but reading through this forum I see that I could face a few potential failures with this bike..

So my question is who has had a 650 or 800 for a few years and never had any problems that can arise with this bike like wheel bearings etc ..

I had a 650 09 from new, it got wrote off last Otober :(
During the 2.5 years i had sprocket and chain renewed, rear swing arm and suspension and front disc warped. All this was done under warranty, sprocket, chain and disc seem to be quite a common one but the Gloucester dealer hasn't had many swing arms needing changing though :beer jug:
Oh yeah, it had covered about 8k miles

I bought my 09 plate 800GS with just under 4k on the clock in July 2010- it had already had the chain/sprocket recall sorted. It's now got 18k on the clock and has been absolutely brilliant - recently had it's 18k service at Adventure Bike Warehouse, and is running better than ever. I was toying with the idea of changing it this year, but now I've decided to keep it for at least another year, I'm just in love with the thing!

So no other problems at all? sounds good:beerjug:

I've got just over 30,000 miles on my '09 F800 GS, only one problem, so far, with a seized rear floating caliper...
it's the dog's danglies :D

Glad your loving it :D yep its a great Bike it's official :thumb yes there are lot's of threads with a fair few failures and pottential failures the most recorded I would say is Tim's first F650 GS is not a good read and embarassing for BMW (it was that bad He got another one :blast) followed by Paddy's F800 destroyed engine :( (which i would say the engine due to its cost is the only reason I have extended warranty)

I do realise if you read something you think perhaps mine will go the same way. I have a paranoia at the moment about my head stock bearings :eek   But at my 24K service no doubt my nominated main dealer will prevail as they do :thumb2 :comfort

I would say my F650 from new on the 58 Plate and at 23,100 odd miles has just had the odd recalls picked up with service intervals and touch wood I'm also loving it.

Paging Micky : not many problems I beleive with his F8 and 65,000 miles Plus recorded to boot :augie

it's the dog's danglies :D

I'm with you there fella :D Yep mines the dogs danglies with Brass knobs fitted :D :beerjug:

You know your bike is on the whole a good one when other manufacturers see it as it is the bench mark and try to Triumph :blast its impressive sales with there own version, maybe they have also read the threads here :green gri

I'm here ... I'm here ;)

As posted elsewhere ... 65,000+ miles on mine now :thumb

Bought news in April 2008 it's one of the first. No problems other than usual recalls which should be done now. No corrosion, no complaints :)

Alternator fried itself back end of last year, soon sorted, can happen any time to any bike anywhere so not specific to the 800.

Loving it, great 'bike indeed :thumb

As is human nature, this forum is full of problems, and very little praise. This is probably the same on any forum, so don't give it too much thought.

The problems on this bike have been well documented. Yet, in reality, few have had problems. I was very grateful for my new chain and sprockets, although my old ones were perfectly OK. I've had every mod/recall done, yet my top hose has failed twice. It's now been fixed with a jubilee clip, and I'm fairly sure it won't go again.

This bike has been around for 4 years now. There shouldn't be too many problems out there. Just go enjoy!

There are quite a few horror stories around, I did a a lot of searching before I got my F8.
If you look at all the fault reports most are on early bikes and most seem to be from the same owners, as if they got a Friday afternoon or Monday morning bike. Search for the 1200GSA and there is a horror story about the 4+ final drive assemblies one has had, the owner changed to another 1200 and has had no problems, so there are no real posts since.
When a bike goes wrong we spend a lot of time bitching about it but when it is working well we spend that time constructively, riding and enjoying the bike.

Bought mine in April 2008 and it's been laid up for 1.5 years now after a Mongolia trip during which time it took an absolute thrashing - 40,000 miles in 2 years. Just had to put a new battery in it and other than recalls, it's been flawless. Stunning bike and ready to go again. It's now painted white and has fully upgraded suspension back and front.

24000 miles 58 plate owned from new, usual recalls done, leaky head gasket done twice, new head stock bearings at 22000 miles, replacement starter button done twice - brilliant bike :JB

Had my 59 650 since May/June time and have since covered a bit over 10k. No probs bar the dodgy chain snapping  and the usual gasket leak. All in all, i still ride round grinning like an idiot. :D

Mirroring what v8 and stumpy said - bad news travels fast so don't worry too much about the failures read about on forums as they often not proportionate to the thousands of trouble free miles we cover.

Thanks all for your info...:beerjug: at least now i can go on tour without worrying about my bearings failing!! :D

Would watch the bearings. As you may have seen both my head and wheel bearings were knackered at 7000 miles with it never touching off road. Since having my done it feels great! Warranty is a must though and thats why i plan to start my asap.

Apart from that the F800GS is a dream even at 33BHP!!!! :thumb

Loving mine,it was time to pay up/return to dealer or of course get a nice new shiny one! However 12000 miles and she's perfect.Few recalls done, but a fantastic machine, only used for wet weather and touring with no dramas.
Aim to keep this one one for many years.I have heard on the grapevine that the greys are the better ones,I guess this must be true,or is it grey to match my personality!!
