Trust me, it's a lot less grief to get rid now rather than it crapping out in the middle of nowhere. Mine died while touring in the USA - at a campsite in North Carolina. Cost me in a fortune in a mobile bill to have the UK manufacturer talk me through shorting it out.

The alarm and immobiliser are the same device.
But it is possible to disable the alarm separately via some settings in the controller. You might require the respective manual for that.
You can order a new fob at any BMW dealer.
As far as can I remember it was around £35.
I got a second one a few years back in case the first one would fail one day (still working though...).
If you change/add fobs, the alarm controller requires to be set up again.
You can easily do it yourself with the manual in hand.
Since 7 years, the alarm/immobiliser system worked on my bike without any problem.
Alarms and/or any sort of immobiliser on bikes................don't, just don't.
They offer very little in terms of theft prevention and cause no end of grief.
Let's face it....BMW electrics don't need any additional help to go tits up
Agree completely with other posters - get rid of it NOW. Far better to strip it off now, in a workshop, under 'controlled conditions', than have to bugger about on the side of a motorway in the dark, or in the middle of the desert miles from civilisation.
