Hi Guys quick question. My new to me GSA wasn't fitted with the alarm when it was new. Is it just a buy and plug into the connectors or do things have to be programed I.E dealer fitted?

Edit, should say its an 09 if it makes a difference.

I could be wrong about this but:
I believe you have to (re)program something so a dealer does have to be involved
I don't think the BMW Alarm is Thatcham approved so if you are doing it for insurance purposes you might want to look at a 3rd party

Ok thanks for that. It wasnt really for insurance more I want an alarm and the factory fit seemed like an easy option but maybe it isnt. I will check and see how much were talking about for them to supply and fit it.

Thanks again

The BMW alarm is not Thatcham approved........... and there certainly not cheap, might be better off going for a Datatool

just my penny's worth

The GSA alarm to retrofit is around £120 plus fitting an depending on teh dealer its anywhere between £100 to £200 on top. Juts bought an ex demo GSA and they charged £220 all in, but I had a quote else where for over £330...taking ths piss!

I had a BMW alarm fitted by my local dealer and yes, costs about £230. For me it was for peace of mind more than anything else. Stay with the BMW alarm and get a dealer to fit it so its all covered under warranty. Any other make will mess up the canbus system so I am led to believe.

Believe it or not the alarm manual is extra, doesn't come with the aftermarket kit and almost cost me £5. You can download it on the internet but I pursuaded my dealer to throw it in. Not their fault, BMW don't send kits out with a manual!

Thanks guys your advice is much appreciated. I will be speaking to the dealer on Tuesday and get a price from them, might as well get it sorted out before I pick up the bike if they are around that price.

I got a Datatool to help with the insurance and despite the scare stories it's been fine so far. No problems with the Canbus.

Went for the BMW alarm @ £220 fitted, will be fitted in time for me to pick the bike up tomorrow. To be fair to the dealer the first thing they said was it isnt thatcham approved so its not like they are trying to sell them no mater what. They also said fitting any other alarm would void the wiring guarantee even if they fitted it.
