With a bit of effort it is possible to bust the mechanism which locks the top box to the back rack.
The 2 arms that pull the bottom of the lock onto the rail will, if sufficient brute force and ignorance are applied, sheer off.
At £40 a pop incl postage I decided to try and fix instead ( by which I mean I asked someone else to - thanks Martyn
)
This is the lock.
Drill off the heads of the 4 rivets on the inside of the top box that hold the lock in place through the holes shown and remove it.
To get at the arms and drill holes to reattach them you will need to carefully file off the end of this pin and drift it out. ( pin is centre of picture ).
Two small screws used to re attach the arms just clear the barrell of the lock.
Another pic of screw in place.
Drift the pin in pic 3 back into place and flatten the end to secure ( although I doubt it would work loose ) and job done.
Note - the rivets to re attach to the box have a very long head. Motorworks supply at 59p each plus p&p if you cant source yourself.
