BMW and Mini dealers to offer Shell oils as Castrol loses contract

Shell has announced that it has been chosen by BMW AG as its only recommended global supplier for aftermarket engine oils for its BMW, Mini and BMW Motorrad brands.

From the start of 2015, premium engine oils manufactured by Shell will be available to customers at BMW’s network of more than 3,500 dealers in more than 140 countries, including the UK.

Until now, Castrol has been BMW's strategic oil partner since 1999.

The new collaboration means that Shell will produce and supply BMW’s branded engine oils. These products will meet the latest BMW engine specifications and are underpinned by Shell’s PurePlus Technology.

Mark Gainsborough, executive vice president for Shell Lubricants, said: “We are honoured to become BMW AG’s recommended supplier of aftermarket engine oil. We look forward to jointly supplying, distributing and marketing these oils, as of start 2015.”

“This is recognition of the benefits of Shell’s engine oil expertise and cutting-edge technology by one of the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. This includes an acknowledgment of the value of our most recent innovation: Shell PurePlus Technology for premium engine oils.”“

This deal brings two leading brands together to offer the best of performance and technology to BMW service customers. Both companies have a very strong commitment to premium products and services, giving us much in common.”

So bmw have been telling us the oil developed by them and castrol as being the ONLY one suitable for use in the WC ie Castrol Power 1 Racing 5w40 and only sold by bmw dealers at a ridiculous price is being replaced by a Shell oil.

Does this mean that over the last few months Shell have developed a specific oil for the wc and in turn will only supply it via the bmw dealer network or will they perhaps just change the labels on a stock oil.

Does it mean that the warranty on my new gsa will be invalid as it is running on the now non sanctioned castrol oil

It really is utter, utter bollox isn't it

Yep bmw charge you £16 to £17 per litre for power 1 racing 5w40 (special bmw ) oil, now Shell do not have a 5w40 in their range and list shell ultra 10w40 for wc models at £36 for 4 litres.

What price will it be by the time it is rebadged as BMW oil and how will it magically be fine to replace a 5w40 oil ?

Bloody ridiculous when you look at Quantum oils (vw own brand ) which is made by Castrol but cheaper to buy from vag dealers than Halfords own brand stuff

If Castrol has had the contract since 1999, how come Astles use Mobil oil ?.

BMW & Shell have been getting cosy for a while. A mate works in a retail field role for them and has a company car. The leasing company is BMW finance and most people in his grade drive 3 series cars as the monthly lease is skewed to make them more car for your income tax payment, compared to VAG, Volvo, Jag etc.

Castrol / Shell / whomever pay for the privealge of being asociated with WMB / Triumph / whomever............... It has always been thus.

When I used to run a Rotax engined CCM the oil of (CCM's) choice was Mobil1 - Mobil1 in a fecking tractor engine  We all used 20/50 dino and they ran MUCH better on that :)

The LC doesn't use any oil so the cost doesn't really matter - just a few quid to make sure you have the best correct grade stuff from any of the manufacturers at service time.

So the WC actually doesn't have a crap clutch and gearbox, it was just that substandard Castrol oil all along.

As they say in Glasgow; aye, right. (The only known instance of two positives indicating a negative) :)

It doesn't have a crap clutch and gearbox regardless of oil choice.

Yeah, come along Mr Packer - surely the message has travelled as far as Scotlandshire by now :nenau

The WC is as near perfect a bike as one could wish for and all gearbox issues are down to rider error. You just need to BLIP THE THROTTLE when down changing and all is good. :blast

They must be different model WC's that you've ridden to the example I was supplied with as a demo bike. That one really did have a dire clutch/gearbox. I think we should just agree to differ on this point:D

I know Andres, that's why you've bought KTM and I've bought Yamaha.

My gear changing abilities after 46 years of riding the odd 1/4 million miles were shown to be inadequate for the magnificent WC. Fortunately other manufacturers products seem to be as tolerant of my limited skills as previous generation plus G and F series BM's were. Slick as hot knife through butter clutchless up changes and and a quick blip coming down the box. I really must learn how to ride sometime :D

My lc doesn't need the throttle blipped on downchanges it is going up the gears that it is shit
