Well wanted to do my own servicing not only to save cost but i like buggering about myself, anyway in preperations i bought a DVD from Jim http://www.jvbproductions.com/Camhead_R1200_2010-2013.html brilliant DVD and great lad Jim answered some questions i had.

Anyway everything that BMW had done at the service last year was wrong as suggested by Jim. Sump plug far too tight, oil filter far too tight, final diff fill plug far too tight (must have been factory), final drive level 230mm!!! No grease on any of the threads anywhere all bone dry and result lots of chalky build up in all threads. I realise that its going to tighten up through time but the force i had to put onto these to break them was unreal!

So we are expected to pay large sums to these guys to keep warranties valid but half the issues are due to their guys not following the procedures, rather annoying!

I will carry on doing the service myself, at least i know its all done, will fight with them on warrenty if i need it!

Whats everyone elses experiences when you start servicing yourself??
 
There's a great deal of cash to be saved for sure.It's worth investing in a GS911 or it's not really a service you're doing! If you can get hold of a bike lift it will make life much easier too I buy genuine filters and my fluids from Opie Oils where we get a tosser discount which makes the price better than some pattern parts :thumb
 
Yep, managed to buy a GS911 last week great bit of kit. Got all the oils from Opie using the discount code great service, bougtht the genuine oil filter from BMW online £16 delivered which wasnt too bad. Opie only do the K+N filter for oil so i opted to buy genuine for this.
 
K&N really do not filter very effectively (too thin) though oiled foam filters filters do a good job. However, OEM flows air more than well enough and isn't costly So best to stick with OEM.
The various fasteners are best covered full length in a good copper grease. Marine grade dielectric grease is better for anti corrosion but it lubes the thread so can result in over tight fasteners that can still unscrew.
My engine front cover corroded at the bolt holes some were cracked paint but the belt cover bottom bolt corroded very badly out of sight and spread under the paint.
The cover also corroded under the alternator. Well out of reach for normal cleaning.
Cause is dissimilar metals (steel/ally), aggressive environment (salt and heat) and bare metal where the joint face was machined.
I used copper grease all the way up the threads and copper washers under screw heads.

I've always done my own servicing, the Boxer layout is so easy to work own. Mine is a 2007 and that even has screw adjustable valve clearances just like the Honda C70's/90's! I did buy a TwinMax for throttle body balancing and a GS-911, which was very useful when stripping the ABS motor recently! The satisfaction I get from doing myself is great, I may not be as quick as a professional mechanic but I'm much cheaper and there's no hassle taking the bike to a garage.

I also service my cars, and I've never taking a hit on PX as I keep all the receipts and records of when stuff was done.
 
I phoned OPIE oils and they told me the only oil filter they had was a K+N no mention of the Mahle option or i would have taken it. Nightmare could have saved a lot of hassle getting it all from OPIE, i simply didnt want the K+n so went elsewhere.
