BMW at the NEC - Some thoughts.

I asked why there wasn't a standard GS available on the stand yesterday-the reply was they didn't have a 2017 model available but there was a (used) 2016 model on the world of BMW stand I could sit on if I wanted to. No thanks nobbers

Went to the NEC today. Not much to get excited about but it was a pleasant day. Have to say, the comments on here about the BMW stand are right though - total waste of space. The only two interesting bikes they had were a new GS Rallye (which was a bit disappointing anyway) and a GS310 (which looked seriously cool) but both were fenced off.

The rest of the stand was given over to 95 variants of the RnineT, which was outclassed by bikes from just about every other manufacturer doing the same thing but better (IMHO of course!) and a load of scooters.

Ducati and KTM stands were way better and the best BMW (the 8-Ball painted green RT) wasn't even on the BMW stand.

And finally guess how much BMW want for the new Street Guard Air jacket....

...If you guessed £1,500 well done. You were only £225 under. £1,725 for a jacket - FFS...

£1,725 ...........They are taking the piss , or were on drugs when they thought that price up.

£1725...I best get another Rukka jacket now before they put their prices up to match then

Good point. Happy with my current rukka jacket but do need trousers.

The SOS button on the GTL is a waste of time. How many people end up within arms length of the bars when they've had a crash? I carry a Delorme InReach whenever I ride because I ride alone on quiet roads a lot. Although there is a handlebar mount for the InReach, I never bothered with it - I carry it in my top pocket so it's within reach if I ever got thrown from the bike.

About the BMW stand at the NEC: I haven't been so I'm going by what has been described here, but you have to remember who BMW's target market is. The people that buy BMW bikes, for the most part, are the same people that buy BMW cars - office executives. Those people don't agonise about the finer details and features of the bike, they pick up a brochure at the dealership, point to a picture and say "I want that one". Motorcycling is the new golf - it's the latest yuppy fad. Ten years ago it was surfing. In another few years, it will be something else. BMW know that. They know they don't have to convince those people to buy their brand, so they don't bother wasting time and money trying.

I think you'll find the SOS function will trigger if the bike detects a crash regardless of where the fat twat ends up

I hardly think the finely honed physique of our resident insurance guru merits that epitaph ;)

And when you get knocked out or bust your arm and ribs sliding into the road furniture or flying into the ditch?

As for surfing, it was never that popular around London E1. What did we miss out on?

Which reminds me..............

Ironing boards are really surfboards.
Surfboards that gave up their dreams and got a boring job.

There's a moral there I believe; don't be an ironing board :)

I used to surf (decades ago) and I remember a point break off the coast of Torness and the place was filled with seaweed (explains why they had to shut down a reactor - I'm surprised it hasn't happened earlier!)

So why do BMW bother having a presence there then?

Was at the show yesterday and the MU 2017 GS (on the stage but out of the reach of grubby hands) looked - minus a couple of cosmetic tweaks - exactly the same as the old one. :nenau

If I was going to replace my super smashing blue 2014 GSA it would be with a nice classy Red or White 2017 GSA.

The TB GSA looks so last week vintage and is slightly common now dahrling... :P

Is that set in stone or will you need to firm up on it later?

What about the new Ducati colour option :augie

Most on here are so familiar with the BMW range that the stand will always underwhelm with just bikes dotted about. Perhaps they should do something exciting, they must have a marketing team to spruce things up. I was on the stand on Tuesday and it was busy but bland.

They could start by making a bit more of the history of the BMW with a few old battered ones around. An engine chopped in half so you we can see whats moving, like the KTM engine display which seemed to hypnotise people that stood close.

BTW I ride an RT Lc and Gs 1100.

Some good ideas there. You ahve to capture your audience's attention!
I'm considering visiting EICMA next year to see how it should be done!

Went yesterday disappointed not a big gs presence on stand.

Maybe BMW have decided that the R9T market is the future, and they're trying to get people away from the GS style of bike.:nenau:P
