BMW have to say what they say because some numpties will fit guards that will restrict airflow - it will happen because there are some seriously stupid in this world. It is also difficult to predict what effect guards may have in all conditions so better safe than sorry. If BMW produce guards then I might be tempted to use them but otherwise I ain't gonna bovver cos for my riding they have proved to be unnecessary.
Tell that to the guy who picked up his new GS from Lind the same day I did in 2002 - holed his oil cooler on the way home.

I ran 1100GS's for 70k without a problem and 1150's mainly without one, but the stone thro' headlight gives me more concern, TBH

Local BMW sales manager actually rang me to say if I had any overheating problems, to take off the rad guards before the bike got to the dealers.
He is one of the good un's me thinks.

They are probably just looking for something to blame for all the problems they are having due to their terrible quality control . maybe that guy with the rad guards on the M25 is to blame for the spate of camchain failures ;-)

Nothing new here. The same warning of doom came from BMW regarding the oil and hex heads.
As said above it is to cover their ass if some idiot sticks a sheet of metal over the rads with half a dozen holes drilled in them.

So the headlamp - less than an inch away from the oil cooler - is worth guarding, but the oil cooler isn't, despite the fact they're both threatened by the same crap being thrown at them?
Losing a headlight will spoil your day - losing an oil cooler could end your trip...

Yeah but, the oil cooler sits further back in a recessed way than the light
In reality it is really quite well protected naked
Never had to pick out many stones or had dented fins over many 1000's of miles
Just my opinion which maybe different to others
That said, the Motoradical combined cover is a top bit of kit & IMHO the best on the market for the 1150's
I've got a grill over both my headlamp and oil cooler ............. it makes me feel safe

fella i know with an LC has had one of the radiators holed. he is having it replaced today at a cost to him of £300
he is then going to invest in a pair of rad guards.
I will mention this thread to him and perhaps he will add his 2p later... he is a member of this forum albeit a brand new one.
To be fair to BMW the only real choice that they have is to put a blanket ban on rad guards to cover their arse's.
This way it covers them for any dodgy guards made Steptoe & Sons that might be made with a priority towards protection before airflow, and contrary to what roamer says, I would rather replace a rad than the damage that can be done to a motor by overheating, often head gaskets at best, knackered bores pistons and valve gear or engine seizure at worse.
However, I would like to think that the mighty GS has an array of warning lights and sirens followed by some sort of thermal trip protection that would shut the motor down before overheating damage could occur.

It has a thermostatically controlled fan and a temperature guage if that's what you mean? 
That's me. I was overtaken
blush) last week by a Porsche, who cut in very close ahead of me and sped off and at just the same time I got covered for a few seconds with a fine drizzle of blue coolant. Only, as it was dark, I thought it was simply a spot of rain, and so carried on for another 30 miles. It was only when I parked and saw a puddle collecting slowly under the bike that I realised what happened. The bike got recovered to the dealer and they've just finished repairing it. At motobiker says, it will be a bit under £300. They've checked the bike for any sensors and warnings, but there was nothing, so they're happy that the engine stayed cool enough (I still had most the coolant on board by the end of the journey) and hasn't come to any harm. It could have been a lot worse.Next thing to do to the bike: fit rad guards and a light guard too.

Fook what bmw think. I put a pair of rad guards on my lc back in february and not made even 1deg temp rise. Whats the fuss? Get em on unless ya want a catastrophic breakdown or ya got plenty of $. Then sell em when your finished,no worrries.
If they are bothered about it overheating they could always put a fan on the other side ,i am putting them on mine
