I changed the plastic stock standard guards over for the same BMW alloy ones i have on my GSA thinking they would offer better protection in an off. Up until Saturday i had not put them to the test but after my ambition wrote a cheque my ability could not cash the sauce and i went down hard after landing on a slope after a jump.
The result was one badly mangled guard (amongst lots of other bits ) which was pulled out of two of the three mounting points resulting in the two mounting points being broken in half............looking at the guard it is evident it broke off on impact leaving the head cover to do its best.
From now on i will be running with no guards and a BMW condom along with a tube of metal putty

The Wunderlich carbon fibre guards are the only guards which work. Bars still don't protect the engine covers and bend on a good drop.

But as the carbon covers are attached to the head covers they wont stop the cover being dislodged on impact :nenau

The TT guards do offer some impact protection, but as happened to the BM guards (Scotsmun, above) the mounts tend to break off :nenau

Perhaps the best protection is these two plus engine bars :blast or as Scotsmun says keep fingers crossed and carry metal repair :D

Kiwi, looks like you dont need those carbon guards whilst your riding on carpet! I'll take them off your hands for a cool $100

wunderlich Carbon covers

I've ordered these covers (paid in full)and they have been on backorder since Aug. of last year. The US dealer still has not come through. Are these available in other parts of the world???

they make great quality carbon bits, in fact they may make the gaurds for wunderlich.

These used with TT engine bars offer good overall protection.
These are Buffeted behind the Guard by the Std BMW rubber.
But as stated the mounting points are weak.
