Head Banging

I do experience some buffeting but this seems to be when following large vans at or above 70 mph.

IMO, a great alternative to the Tour-X if you have a BMW shaped head but not an all year helmet.

What is a BMW shaped head? And presumably when you say 'not an all year helmet' you mean it is ideally suited for the 'Summer' ? (whatever that is).

On the subject of buffeting - any motorway trips above 60 mph result in constant buffeting from the standard screen on my 07 GS. I have been recommended to try Nippy Norman's High & Wide screen which is said to be really smooth and quiet - it doesnt look as nice as the BMW screen but does it give you a quiet ride? Has anyone tried one - or can you suggest a better alternative? What about the GSA screen? Or one of those clip on spoilers ?

One that BMW helmets fit with comfort. :nenau I have tried Arai and they are excruciatingly painful.

Clue here:
It's a damned sight cooler than any helmet I've used before.

Can't help you with that, I have the superior 1150GSA and fitted with a Ceebaily screen. I get no buffeting when wearing either my System IV or V. I put it down to the peak catching the turbulent air created by larger vehicles.

Recommended Vendor for the Enduro?

I'm considering ordering the BMW Enduro from the UK as the price is better than in Canada. Can anyone recommend a good vendor...price and customer service?

Thanks

Ron

I went for a jolly down to Christchurch last week, and went into the Smart Riders shop - and what an Alladin's Cave that turned out to be!

Rukka Armax, Daytona Trans Opens, Kriega Bags, Gloves, Goggles all sorts of thing with lots of stock.

Whilst trying on a pair of boots, the chap behind the counter said he had something which he thought I would like, as he had seen me park the GSA. (aka 'seen me coming' :augie)

He brought out a lovely, carbon fibre Uvex Enduro helmet - very similar in looks and shape to the BMW Enduro, but looked a bit meaner IMHO:

More details here: http://www.uvex-sports.de/

Tried it on (its Size Large was a good fit, I'm normally a XL for Tour X or Hornet DS). Very comfy, very light, nice visor with a v slight tint to it as standard. Claims to have a very good anti fog coating, which the chap in the shop said was also very good, and much better than the old Schuberth efforts of the past. Anyway, it was priced at something like £470-480 ish (cant rememer exactly but much cheaper than I would have thought).

I've got a choice of three helmets as it is, so didnt buy it. And tbh, I dont think I will ever need a carbon fibre helmet - but at that price point, it doesnt seem so much of a luxury.

That looks really :drool

And 500 sounds a lot better than the 1500 needed for the BMW Carbon Enduro!

Ron,

I spoke to my local dealer this morning. After ordering some bits, I asked about sending you a helmet.

The dealership in question is very helpful but they said that they cannot ship abroad. Not that they wouldn't like to but they are prevented by whatever contract they have with BMW.

They'd be happy to supply me with what you want and for me to send it to you. I suspect that the cost of postage and insurance etc. will make the price something close to what you would pay a Canadian dealership. :nenau

If what you wanted, in terms of size and colours, is in stock, you'd be looking at about £270.

I don't know what the shipping would cost but you also have to add £12 forum subscription so that we could communicate by PM. ;) :D

Thanks

Hey Mike,

Good of you to look into that for me. I had coffee with a guy yesterday who was proudly showing his new Enduro helmet that he bought direct from the UK. It was very light and after a bit of googling I assumed it was the new Carbon helmet. I suspect now it was their first carbon helmet and not the brand new 09 one. The difference, other than price, is about 3-400grams??

He said he paid about 450 dollars (around 300 gbp) so that must be their first gen carbon eh? Isn't the new one way more?

thanks again

Ron

The new one is only coming to stores now and comes in at 1500 pounds!!

I have had my Enduro lid for about a year now, its light (not carbon fibre) reasonably quiet and comfortable, the visor can wobble at speed if not fully closed, never had an issue with wind getting under the peak or the peak marking the visor, no issues really, the little breath guard kept falling out but thats about it.

There is talk on adv rider that some peeps suspect that the BMW Enduro is made by Uvex, but with stronger stuff like kevlar:nenau

Anyhow The uvex carbon at £500 looks very tempting. Does anyone have one and able to report about it ?
:D

I've done about 25,000 miles in my Enduro and despite owning a system 5 as well, it is my lid of choice. To answer some of you comments:

The other parts you have missed:

Great peripheral vision
Very simply to swap out visors (two screws only needing half a turn and don't need to be removed)
Removable peak so you can use it as a road helmet
Removable visor with good fit for goggles
Best of all - it's very light

I think it's shite might be a little strong... :augie

Bought a Tour X-3 a couple of weeks ago and it's great!! More comfortable than the BMW lid I tried. The only downside with the X3 is the amount of time it takes to change the visor, but hey I guess it's something you have to live with. I say the "only" downside - the BMW lid was about £100 cheaper, but hey the Arai is more comfortable and I guess that's half the battle! :)

Warranty

Bought one of the BMW helmets when I purchased my 1150 late 07.

Within a week of me buying it, it started leaving score marks down the front of the visor even with the peak fully retracted and held in place ( by masking tape )

Immediately contacted the BMW dealer who I bought it off " if possible, could you manage with the problem for a while...as it is a new helmet and there isnt any spares or damage database running for it yet " asked the dealer, being a nice person i said yes.

10 months later I finally get it sent off, only for it to be refused warranty due to wear and tear, even though the fault was initially reported in the first week ........The dealer knew that I did a shedload of miles that year ( 45,000 miles ) and BMW said they only covered warranty on an average use policy...no more than 12,000 miles per annum. So the Round The World motorcycle comes with a helmet that can only go half-way round the world?????

Snotty letter sent off,and did finally get a new helmet ( manufacturing fault on old one ).......using the helmet untill its buggered now, and will never buy another one off BMW again....next time its Shoei or Arai.

Good to see that you stuck to your guns and won out in the end. The biggest gripe I have with BMW dealers over the years is about average mileages, and how they can apply them to a premium priced, round the world motorcycle! I know warranties have to have limitations or everyone would take the piss and they'd be bankrupt in a week, but you cant then market/sell something as being rock solid and enduring, but limit you to 12,000 miles average use.

Mike.

It saved my nut

I use the enduro helmet and compared to my shoei it has great visability and as I use it with both visor and/or goggles it is versatile. It is also nice to have a helmet that does not mist up in 5 seconds.

:rob
The final test was a couple of weekends ago when I found myself sliding down the tarmac on my head and shoulders followed by a muddy ditch :blast. After being checked out my skull was intact but brusied mainly due to the glasses that I was wearing and a bruised ear due to the intercom.

I've used my Enduro for 6 months everyday now and done 12000 miles in it, I'm admittedly on my second visor but that's more due to my own stupidity than anything else.
It's the quietest lid I've ever had (I feel head shapre has more to do with this than anything else) and I use it no problem with a Scala FM and it's plenty quiet without earplugs.
I used it last week with some BMW Goggles on the BMW off road level 1 and it was fine, I've since then took it completely apart and washed all the liner (got very sweaty on the course) and put it all back together no problems.
I've used it in all weather in fact here's a pic to demonstrate:

I fit my own Pin Lock to it (it's simple with a slow speed drill) and it's not too noisy on the motorway at 80 with the peak fitted and no ear plugs.

I've just seen a picture of the new Carbon Fibre version and frankly I've went all unnecessary.:drool

I find most BMW gear awesome. Expensive, but very good.

Uvex makes the BMW Enduro helmet

When it was launched I was told that UVEX is the maker of the helmet ?

so a thousand pound premium sounds just about right !

Foggy Helmet

So Im a bit curious about others experience with the Enduro in the rain. I recently bought the enduro and so far I have had a piss poor time with it in the rain. It seems to fog up easily. It is much worse for fogging than my ARAI Quantum II. I do not see that much air can get from the chin vents to the visor to keep the breath fog away.

Any thoughts or similar things going on with yours?
