Does the BMW GPS give any extra features over the standard Garmin version. I'm tyring to work out why the BMW one cost £1200 and the Garmin costs about £450.

Doesn't the BMW version have some extra large buttons on the side? Easier to use with gloves on. Are you sure you're comparing the correct units? I ask because here in the states, the difference is only about 15-20%.

Yes, it has extra button for some functions that you would otherwise access using the touch-screen, remote control or drill-down menus.

I believe that apart from BMW dealer locations being etched into the basemap, the functionality is identical.

Would I get one? If I were truly minted, yes.

Is it worth the extra? Probably not!

I believe BMW dealers will haggle over the price of the Navigator II.....;)

Cheers

Yep thats a fair and objective comparison

Yes, the Nav2 is over priced.
Yes, it doesn't provide much more than you get with the garmin.
No, you cant get the BMW mount without buying the Nav2
Yes, the BMW mount is far far better than anything RAM, Touratech et al produce.

The way I saw it was that the Nav2 was worth (to me) the extra £300-400. I justified this because of the following

* I could pick the bike up fully sorted including the Nav and autocom already installed (and warrantied) by BMW.
* You cannot buy the Nav2 bracket with the additional buttons seperately. it does not work with the garmin 2610. It is very useful - you try zooming in/out using the touch screen with gloves :D
* Its got a bigger datacard.
* Your looking at >£100 for a mount, if you buy the garmin. You can get them for less, but you get what you pay for etc.

There is a Dutch company producing a clone of the Nav2 bracket, called the Perfect Pilot (details here), for 275 Euros, ex VAT. Or 375, including Bluetooth support.

I haven't tried it, and I have no connection with the company, but I know a lot of Dutch GSers (and bikers in general) buy their Garmin kit from this company.

One of my colleagues just bought the navII - He got 200 quid off...first unit was faulty and has now been replaced...looks good on the bike and does the job...thinking of getting one myself but it's hard to justify that kind of money for something that will only be useful occasionally...
