Hi Guys
Had a nightmare and dropped my GS  which has bent the screen and snapped the two screws just above the headlights.
Ive tried to google this part (the metal housing not the screws) but cannot find anything.
Does anybody have any experience of this problem please.
The screws have sheered off as well which is a pain as I dont know how Im going to get the remnants of the screw out of the housing.

Just to be clear its the lower mount that stops the screen moving forward when moving at speed.

Going to need a new screen as well. What a day

Thanks guys
Norm

You can get replacement brackets new or second hand - I had to replace mine as it fractured and I got a replacement from Motorworks. Easy enough to replace it but if you can get the screws out and its not damaged that would be even cheaper.

Hi, if you google MAXBMWMOTORCYCLES.com it shows exploded views and part numbers, also shows prices in US Dollars - don't know if these prices are current or not. You need to find Windscreen under chapter frame and fairing, Alan

Completely agree with the honourable gentleman. I've had to replace my screen bracketry due to an unfortunate bike/ditch interface and just replaced the lot. Have a chat with Motorworks as they are bound to have something second hand on their shelves but I don't recall the bit's being a kings ransom from the dealer.

Just a tip on the screen, the tinted one is cheaper than the clear one and looks the business in my opinion. A lot of people have changed to teh tinted and may have a really good clear one lurking in the garage so put up a wanted ad in the relevant section.

Oh, welcome to the forum:thumb

I'd replace screen with aftermarket standard ones not that great, noisy, wobble about, buffeting,my vario was much thicker & a good replacement was tinted looks much better,I have a touratech faring now it's superb incorporates side bars like winglets in the design :)

Normsky,

It's not the end of the world.

What about the rocker cover protectors etc? They're the first to touch down. i've got some spares in the garage somewhere from a previous encounter with gravity.

Not pristine, but passable.

Which side was involved in the dastardly deed?

…and welcome +1.

Fluff.

A big thank you to everyone who has replied, some great info there. I really appreciate the help and the welcome. Hopefully wont cost me an arm and a leg to put right.

Fluffy - Theres a bit of scuffing to cylinder cover and (left hand side drop) and thats it.
I would have though the screen mount would have been made of tougher material to be honest.
Hardest part was picking the bloody thing up on a steep hill.

Thanks Again guys

I couldn't buy just the bolts you are talking about when the missus broke hers off road in Belgium,
In the end I pushed the snapped off pieces through the bar with a drill bit, it's hollow all the way through, as the bits that broke off were quite long I drilled the bit with the nut in ans using araldite I glued them back together, worked perfectly

Sorry to hear of your plight.
I have a brand new boxed GSA screen that is available, screen only, no use to me and my std GS, needed the upper bar support if I was going to make the switch.

Give me a shout if it would be useful.

Cheers

Can the broken lower mount be fixed ?

Im not an engineer at all, but could the lower bracket or "BMW GSA Support F headlight bracket" as its called, be fixed? Basically if the remnants of the broken screw/bolt could be removed its good to go.
Its a bit scratched but a sanding and spray job would suffice I think. Im not sure yet if the screw/bolts are aluminum or plastic but for 200 quid for a bit of aluminium, its got to be worth a go.
Im going to take it apart tomorrow so will be able to get a better look.
Thanks guys

Hi Gazza
Sorry just seen your post mate.
The screw bits on my have just sheared of right at the head of the screw. most of it is inside the mount. Did you just push the broken bit out or did it need drilling?
Thanks

Hers were the same, broke off flush, I just pushed them through the hollow bar from one end, they are not threaded just smooth as in my pic, it's not too easy to drill the other bit but if you have access to either a pillar drill or a vice it would certainly be easier,

if you're talking about the tube that the screen pivots go into, bear in mind it changed from being hollow all the way through to being blind holes some where along the line. My 2011 was blocked (until I drilled it through) but the early bikes were hollow.

Ah, I didn't realise they had changed them might make it slightly more difficult getting the broken pieces out then, bugger.

Hi Daz
Yes mines a 2011 as well and took the screen off last night to get a proper look at things. I cant get the screws to push through so will have to resort to drilling. Did you need any special bits etc?

The bottom bracket looks like its connected to the headlight housing and I cant see any other holding bracket for the headlight. If I loosen this to get the screen mount loose, do the headlights come loose and do they need aligning etc after. I have a feeling I'm creating a nightmare for myself here :(
What a pain for a part that should be easily replaceable.

I took my headlight out on Friday to fit a headlight protector, very easy to do, 1 bolt either side, the wiggled it out through the front far enough to get to the screws on the rear,
I didn't even need to disconnect the clocks or any wiring, it wasn't connected to any of the fairing brackets,
I just wondered if you take off the fairing bracket with the broken pieces inside if you turn it on its side and tap it with a small hammer or spanner if the bits will simply fall out, they are not very tight in there.

The headlight is attached by 2 torx screws and a rubber grommet. Remove both screws and headlight should pull off the grommet complete with instrument cluster. It's all very theft proof.

My GSA also fell into a fence and bent the top support bar. I thought the lower screen frame (the one with adjusting slots) was bent. I bought a used replacement. But suspect the old frame was ok
Functionally I can see no difference between older and newer frames.
The lower frame tubular hoop is screwed to the side castings with screws than will not move. I suspect they have a permanent thread lock.

In my case the top tube (GSA) was bent so had to be replaced.

I also had to straighten the screen mounts on the beak under frame. They were only slightly out and Moved with adjustable spanner. The screen support sits level and everything else is straight.

I fitted some Wunderlich (IIRC, or maybe Touratech) alloy screen mounting lugs to replace the plastic ones on my 2004 bike and the 'tube' was hollow, the two lugs were connected onto a threaded bar that ran through the tube. When fitting to my 2008 bike I had to drill the tube to pass the threaded rod through as it was 'blind' in the middle. Presumably when they did the model upgrade in 2007 they changed the design of the front screen mount.

Edit: Found a Touratech Hardpart available at motorworks (similar to the alloy items I fitted), part number FAA03800. Not threaded together so will fit the later '08 onwards bikes without needing to drill the screen mount bracket. £29.51 inc Vat.
