BMW Insurance

I exchanged the RT for the GS in September and informed BMW insurance of the change of details prior to picking up the new bike. After two months and numerous phone calls I'm still waiting for my documents and a cheque for the difference in premiums.

I was just wondering what other peoples experiances were with them.

Told them about bike change on Wednesday afternoon, new policy and schedule arrived in Fridays post. I can't complain about that.

My experience of BM insurance services is, they are very competitive but the service is abysmal…. but there again, as they are based in Essex, you can't expect everything

you don't find out how good your insurance is till you need it -

thats when you find out the few quid you saved on the "cheaper" premium doesn't seem such a good deal .

I'm guessing that if you look very carefully at the documentation you'll see somewhere on there the words Devitt Insurance, probably at the bottom as the registered company.

In the past I've had a number of run ins with this incompetent lot and can whole heartedly reccomend them to be used for light construction work, hole filling, being put up against the wall come the revolution, etc.

Their policies and procedures internally are apalling, they lose paperwork then say they've never received it. They lie and threaten to cancell your insurance if you don't send them immediatly the documentation they (haven't yet) asked you for and it's all your fault. I've personally put in a note to the insurance ombudsman about their activities because of they way they act.

Then again, they could have changed <fx manic laughter>

Thanks for the reminder--I have yet to receive the policy and on checking I realise my cover note is out of date!

Spoke to Nick today on 01708 385566, "We are waiting for a signed form from you, but it looks like it hasn't gone out to you yet." He's sending the form with a further cover note.

i waited two months for a refund when i cancelled my insurance when i changed bikes, also told they hadnt recieved paperwork back etc etc. they are cheap for a reason. hate to think how long they take to process any claim.. on another note.. carole nash processed a cancellation within days. nick

Been with them for 2 1/2 yrs now. Very efficient and settled my one claim within 10 days - I've always dealt with them direct (rather than through a dealer) - try giving them a ring 01708 385566.

Still waiting for my certificate 2 months on.

As of this morning local dealer said they had sent the paperwork , BMW insurance still have not got it yet!!!!!!!!

We were comparing prices with the rep on the stand at the NEC and left the details with them on the Friday. By Wednesday following they had phoned back and sorted out the insurance.

Not only did they transfer the insurance cover to BMW's plan, but they saved us around 70GBP in the process. Happy customers.

Incidently, the insurance had originally been arranged by Motorcycle *@ity with Devitt (don't ask...). The transfer was simple and effective.

BMW will be getting my next bit of business (if all goes to plan with a 12GS) because they quoted me significantly less than half the amount wanted by those bandits from Norfolk.

I've been in contact with BMW insurance three times since I first posted this topic and still haven't recieved any documents or refund. Each time I speak they say their waiting for the refund cheque from the finance department. I wonder if the finance department will be so free and easy when their waiting for my renewal fee next year. Their going to have a bloody long wait!

Further to my posting of 29 November, I received a recorded delivery letter this morning dated 23 December saying they hadn't received the proposal form (which I sent off early December) giving me 7 days notice that the policy would be cancelled.

Due to the Christmas break the seven days had already expired by the time the recorded delivery letter arrived. Phoned them up to be told the policy has been cancelled.

BMVV Insurance (aka Devitts, aka NIG, aka Churchill, part of Credit Suisse) might be cheap, but so is their service. Goodness knows what happens if you were to make a claim!

Am now insured with Bikesure (tel 08700 771377).

I had to use BMW insurance once, when I crashed my old F650 into a car, that crossed my path.

Repairs etc. went smoothly, paperwork went smoothly, however the companies doing the real work (formerly Devitt, now Churchill) then employ solicitors, who take their own time (and earn a f*ing lot of money for reading through questionnaires I completed and the odd phone call to the 'other side') aren't always the quickest.

Anyway, as Steptoe said, I had to use them, got my bike repaired without fuss, got my expenses back (helmet, travel to work, bridge toll, as I had to commute by car for a few weeks), etc.

The odd thing, though is that every time I go abroad (2-3 times a year) I have to inform BMW, so that they can make a note of it? ? If I tell them that I use the bike on the continent, shouldn't that be enough???

All I have ever had from them is two letters, I haven't even had sight of the policy, so wouldn't know about any special procedures for foreign travel.

What's also worrying is that I could have been away on holiday on the bike when they decided to pull the plug and I would have been uninsured!

The very fact that the letter was recorded will enable them to check that it arrived the day AFTER their 7-day warning expired.

I don't think BMW should allow themselves to be associated with this organisation.

Major changes to the insurance market caused by the FSA happen in Jan. BMW Insurance will not be offfered by paper quotes at dealers. Instead there will be a link on the BMW GB Motorrad website for a quote and buy system. This will be easier for owners to get a fast quote and cover but may mean dealers no longer having cover note books to instigate immeadiate cover for taxing bikes. This is to avoid dealers registering with the FSA and be buried under a mountain of red tape. The law was brought about by the selling of overpriced warranties on white goods and the bike trade, which relies on insurance sales for income, was sucked in. As a former dealer who has delat with most of the bike insurance companies BMW Insurance was better than most and did at least offer comp cover on service loan bikes.

I was speaking in the future tense. I leave on 14th Jan after nearly 18 years, for reasons some members are aware of. I shall get a bike for myself as I venture into the real world away from BMW and bikes. Thanks to all members who have given me business over the years.

Now why doesn't that surprise me. Oh, that's right, Devitts are involved. This is one of their common scams.

Indeed. Someone needs to take control of the actions of cowboys like this as at the moment there appears to be no body who are willing to take action against these types of dealings.
